Anyone else drowning under a sea of washing due to awful weather?

Tumble dryer is stuffed at back of garage that is full to brim so until dh gets his act together and gets it out I have to rely on radiators, racks and the odd spell of dry weather.

I am literally drowning with washing. Anyone else like me this week?

No tumble dryer here either, keep resisting. Not coping too badly at the moment (we had a couple of nice days at the start of the week and got about four loads dried) but know it will get to crisis point soon if the dreary weather continues.

misdee · 03/11/2005 21:27

i used to have my tumble dryer out on my balconey

currentone one is by the front door.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 21:27

No. I don't have a dryer, nor space for one, and no access to a garden, so am used to having to stay on top of the washing.

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:28

Have to say I buckled and got a dishwasher and it's the best thing I have ever bought

JanH · 03/11/2005 21:28

Good job there's only 3 of you then, expat

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:29

expat - how though? What is your secret? (desperate emotion needed).

Flum · 03/11/2005 21:30

I have a fab dishwasher too. It still smells a bit fishy though Cod!

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:32

Oh my fridge used to smell fishy flum!

codKEMP · 03/11/2005 21:32

Flum · 03/11/2005 21:35

ha ha ha ha ha ha, no it doesn't Cod. Its wonderful. Except it now has pictures of dodgy seagulls all over drawn by dd after an visit to the Isle of Wight.

Blossom
Washing is the bane of my existence! Every evening before bed, I get a load ready to go - put it in, washing powder, stain treatment, etc. In the morning, I turn it on right after my shower. Then, DH, who stays home during the day, takes what's been hanging overnight on the racks off and lays it on the bed and empties the morning load onto the drying rack.

When I get home in the evening, I immediately put another load on and go fold and put away the load he took off the racks in the morning. The stuff that he hung on the racks in the morning is usually dry, so I fold/put away that, too. Anything that's still damp goes on hangers and hung on door handles so we have room to hang more stuff. Once the evening washing is done, I hang that up on the racks for overnight.

Then get the next morning's load ready to go.

The washer is one of those dinky a*& ones you get in rental flats, so we have to do two loads/day.

I won't lie, it does suck.

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:48

blimey expat! you have a good little system going though!

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 21:52

My washing isn't dry in the morning after hanging on racks, it takes around 2 days. In the winter I do a lot of shuffling around of washing onto radiators just to hurry the whole process up.

Does everyone else's washing dry overnight indoors?

JanH · 03/11/2005 21:55

Nope, mine doesn't, hence dryer requirement!

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:57

Mine takes about 2 days and then starts to smell, I hate it. Hence the febreze bottle nearby when ironing as cannot be ar$ed to wash again!

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 22:00

Ours dries overnight, MrsSpoon. BUT this is a well-insulated flat on the 2nd floor. We have electric storage heaters, so we can't hang stuff to dry over them. It's racks or hangers on door handles only. Also have a retractable line over the bath and those mesh squares from Lakeland for drying jumpers over the bath.

The one thing I do buy in bulk is towels. Learned from when DD first took a bout of gastroenteritis to ALWAYS keep plenty of clean towels to hand.

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 22:03

funnily enough expat my clothes dried much mroe in my flat than this house!

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 22:03

To freshen the washing, I used a Kim and Aggie tip of distilled water in a spray bottle w/some lavender oil - I also put some dried lavender in the bottle to keep the scent fresh.

The one thing I miss is how soft the jeans and towels are when they're dried in a tumble drier.

Once a season, I take the duvets, pillows and blankets into a laundrette to wash them in the big machines and use the dryer as a treat.

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 22:06

Actually now that you mention it, three years ago we used to live in a second floor flat, we had people below, above and at either side plus the front rooms were south facing and got any sun going and the washing did dry much faster there. Hmmm maybe I do need a tumble dryer after all, things have changed.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 22:07

You must have lived in our flat, b/c that's exactly the set up we have no. I'd trade it for a house any day, tho .

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 22:14

How long have you lived there expat?

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 22:16

Since June, 2004. Will be here for the foreseeable future, barring any catastrophes (or Lotto jackpots ).

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 22:19

A lotto win would be good!

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 22:20

Rollover this weekend, folks! Get your tickets!

Separate tumble driers - not those pants washer/dryer combos - for everyone.

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 22:20

Expat - LOL
