May sound like an obvious question, but if you were to purchase a Windows 98 operating system, what exactly would you expect to receive?

My DP bought what he thought to be an operating system off Ebay the other day - the title said Windows 98 Operating System - but I was not sure as I could make out the word "upgrade" on the photo. Its arrived and says Windows 98 Upgrade for users of 3.1 and Windows 95.

This is where the Techno-Thicko bit comes in. I need to be sure we haven't got what was described before I go and shout at him!

Help! Please!!

with out seeing the ad on ebay i couldnt tell you if ur DH bought the wrong item or it was advertised incorrectly

however win98 is very dated and i would look at buying a copy of win xp pro

more money but more stable and able to cope with pretty much anything

is there a reason u need 98?

We run XP here at home but DPs computer at work is old and seems to prefer 98! It ran great with it for ages and then someone put XP on and the whole system keeps crashing, so he yearns for 98 but can't find his disk

this is it!

I don't know anything... but that definately says upgrade for 3.1 and 95...

I'm not sure I like the look of it.

if you already have a version of windows on your pc, it is recomended that you would just update to a newer version. Otherwise you would have to reformat your hard drive - losign everything personal on there, or end up with two versions of windows, which would take up the majority of your hard drive. It is nothing to be worried about.

Serah · 02/11/2005 15:46

yes, I wouldn't have bid on it FS.... DP did after going on the (limited) description .

I'm just not sure whether what we ended up with could in any way be described as an operating system.

Kelly, thats what he needs to do - completely reformat the computers hard drive getting rid of XP

omg, i jsut realised. you have xp, and tried to use an upgrade to roll back to 98. That would never work, I'm sorry. You need the full version.
Has he got sp2 on the xp? That helps stabilise it.

Serah · 02/11/2005 15:57

No!!! He's not trying to upgrade to 98!!! He wants to wipe XP off his system completely and install 98 - his original operating system.

He has, I think, just bought the wrong disk as I don't believe what has turned up today is an operating system.

nah, it is jsut an upgrade for those who already have a lower os. give dp a slap.

Serah · 02/11/2005 16:08

Great - thats what I needed to hear!!! I'm just not entirely computer savvy so wasn't sure!

Will look forward to slapping DP when he comes in from work

Thanks Kelly
