I just want a price for a UPVc door. Are all double glazing sales people shady?

No one will give me a price

They will send me a brochure, with no prices. I can tell them what model I want but still they will not send a quote till I make an appointment for someone to come to my house.

AAAAArgh.

Had one round for a quote this evening and he quoted £1300 for 2 doors. We still saw no published price list though he assures us this is with a discount.....

Anyone bought one recently who can let me know if this is a decent quote or not?

What do you mean 2 dooors - like french doors or 2 seperate doors ie front and back door?

I used to do telesales for a couple of double glazing firms. They would never give prices because they wanted to do the whole hard sell thing. They would also charge a lot for just doing a door or a window because they didn't really want to do it, they wanted bigger jobs.

But I wasn't allowed to know prices so can't tell you if thats good or not, plus it was years ago so things would have changed. I would recommend you try a smaller local company though who will probably be happier to do a small job than a big company.

You don't live in the west country do you?

If you look on wickes website you can buy standard measurement doors that will give you a vague idea - obviously made to measure will be more.

You want to try and find an independent small fitter ie someone who works for Anglian or similar during hte week and does private work at weekends.

sounds pricey to me - I reckon you could get them both for under £1k

don't they sell front doors in wickes etc -if you have a standard sized door - then you could find someone to fit it for you?

or go direct to a local manufacturer and they'll be able to recommend an installer?

DH reckons for a decent front door more than £500 because of all the locks etc

Doors are much more expensive than windows. Remember you can negotiate but ensure you are comparing like for like in terms of locks, thickness, type of glass etc

We paid £1300 for new double glazed patio doors (including side window-y bits) and they had to come to the house to measure up and give us the quote as they are all made to measure. There was absolutely no hard sell whatever. The price included all the installation.

We used Wholesale Windows on the Wirral. Not sure what area they cover. They regularly win awards locally for their customer service. They did my mum's whole house last year and she was very impressed with them, which I took to be high praise indeed as she is properly difficult and loves a good complaint.

Www.yaledoor.co.uk - saw an ad for these on tv and all prices are online. Have not used them yet bit they are a lot cheaper than the quotes we have had from other places. Starts at £756 fully fitted

Yale door just do compsite which are more expensive. I'm just after UPVc.

UPVC should be much cheaper than £1300, we just bought a new composite door and even fully fitted that was only £895 (that was with a Yale lock too).

Did you manage to sort it?

We ended up using a company that installs Liniar products. Have never regreetted it!

We used a local window company that has been in the area for years. They were helpful, gave a price, measured carefully and were ready to do any adjustments immediately if there were any problems. My neighbour also used them and found them very good. My friend chose an unusual colour (UPVC) and paid extra with lovely glass and side window. It was £1300. I would add that we had experience of an undercutting window firm which ended up an expensive mistake so we go with reputable family firms.
