HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 12:03

are there really snouts and stuff in sausages???

monkeytrousers · 31/10/2005 12:27

and gristle..all the stuff the other pigs won't eat

teeavee · 31/10/2005 12:28

don't forget the eyeballs and the bollocks

monkeytrousers · 31/10/2005 12:31

I think the correct term is 'mechanically retrieved meat' or something similar..sandblasted from the sinues and bones..and snouts and arseholes. Nothing is wasted.

monkeytrousers · 31/10/2005 12:31

oh, eyeballs yes..

teeavee · 31/10/2005 12:32

barf

SoupDragon · 31/10/2005 12:33

Not only are the Dragons having sausage rolls for lunch but they're reduced because they have to be eaten today. However, I can not be a chave because I do not wear burberry, I do not have my hair scraped back in a ponytail and the aforementioned sausage rolls are from Waitrose. Therefore I must be middleclass-pretending-to-be-poor I think.

HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 12:34

uuuuuurrrrrgggghhhhhhhhh

Well, at least my diet will go better, i loved greggs sausage rolls... yuk!! no more!!

FangAche · 31/10/2005 12:35

Not just in sausages.... in many other meat products!!

But seriousy.... whether its scraped off the cheekbone or sliced off the arse (rump) does it make it any less revolting!?

We eat ribs.... so isn't that us scraping the dregs of meat off of a bone???? Don't see the difference between that and a machine taking dregs of meat off an animals face TBH.

Sausage anyone?

Since watch that programme about the things we should know about sausages I've only bought ones with more than 80% pork in them! Tesco value ones are only 36% pork!!!

HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 12:36

I doubt id eat much if i knew exactly what was in them!!

MarsLady · 31/10/2005 12:37

Yup! Love them hot hot hot! Just out of the oven and popped in the mouth hot! Yummy!

HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 12:46

Lovely DH has just boughtme a cup of tea and... a sausage roll!

Checked the lable... 25 percent pork

uuurggghhhh

RachD · 31/10/2005 12:52

God, I love sausage rolls.
Dh and Ds love them more than me.
And Ds sits there in buggy and makes as much mess and crumbs as possible.
And if that's chavy, then fine, Bring it on !!!!!

Infact the silly comments about not in a pushchair are probably more chavy comments, than anything else written !!

And like Triceratops, & Mirage, I LOVE the Greggs ones - even though, I bet that nutritionally and % of meat wise, they are the worst - a bit of tongue or scrotum - gross - but Do I care ? - not on your nelly - they are lovely !!!!

SoupDragon · 31/10/2005 13:17

25 percent pork, 75 percent pastry, HB?

FangAche · 31/10/2005 13:20

Thats what I thought Soupy - Unless the ingredients were listed separately and it really was the 'sausage' that was only 25% pork! EW!

HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 13:21

lol am going to have a look at the packet again

munz · 31/10/2005 13:21

serious only 30 odd% - what's the rest then? - it's 30% pork (meat I assume) then the rest is fat/crap/water? - is butchers likely to be more? hope so - will go to him in future for sausage I think.

lol@fang's meat cut analysis! rump = arse - remind me no more rump steaks only fillets! (rare occassion to afford one of those!)

FangAche · 31/10/2005 13:23

Munz - The % pork relates to proper pork like loin or such..... the rest is made up of...... wait for it........ HEAD MEAT! And some sausages actually have the % pork and % head meat written on the ingredients. The rest is rusk/fat/salt/herbs. YUM! >baulk

HuggyBear · 31/10/2005 13:25

Wheat flour, pork (25%) margarine [veg oil, hydronated veg oil, water, salt, emulisfier] water, Pork fat, rusk, egg, potato startch, salt, raising agent, modified maize starch, soya flour, dextrose, flavourings, mustard powder, spices, anti toxident, herbs...

but no colouring or preseratives!!!

SoupDragon · 31/10/2005 13:26

The Waitrose ingredients are 49% pork shoulder, water, pork fat (13%) and then all the egg, rusk and herbs etc.

munz · 31/10/2005 13:28

urghhh! ok then so the higher the % of actual meat the better quality/neutiance (sp) - suposadly? most definatly not getting the value sausage any more - (defeats the point of getting 'proper' meat from the butchers) - so what do we recommend then as the best sausage meat value wise?

FangAche · 31/10/2005 13:30

Munz - Tesco finest are 83% pork meat. And they are on special offer just now 12 for £3.... Pork & Leek ones are AMAZING!

Incidentally Mathesons Smoked Sausage is 86% pork!!

munz · 31/10/2005 13:32

we've had the pork and leek ones from kwik save - DH liked them. (at that price I don't think they'd be getting shared with the dogs! lol)

SenoraPostrophe · 01/11/2005 19:33

actually imo sausages shouldn't be more than about 70% meat. the 30% should be cereal, which absrbs the fat in cooking and gives them their flavours. very high meat ones don't taste right.
