I have a cooking apple tree and an eating apple tree in my garden. I have a lot of apples at this time of year. Anyone got any good ideas for using them up?

Scrumpy!

Stick some (a mix of eating and cooking) peeled in a bucket. wait. strain.

That's the gist anyway - maybe a book would be in order.

misdee · 19/09/2003 17:26

send them to me!!!!

janh · 19/09/2003 19:11

lucy, "wait"???

I've heard of vague recipes (eg "cook until done" ) but that's priceless!

Twinkie, when I was a kid we had apple trees and we had an apple picker for the high branches. It was a long pole with a bag on a hoop. All around the hoop was heavy wire which was in a kind of wavy ring round it. (wish I could draw it for you). You could pick the apples by manoeuvring it in the right position - you could catch the apple stalks in between the wavy bits and tug, and the apples would fall into the bag.

I don't know where this thing came from, perhaps my dad made it, I'll ask him if you like.

doormat · 19/09/2003 19:23

only messing, make a pie, crumble with pear and rhubarb(the fruit not the poster)
toffee apples-they last awhile I think

kmg1 · 19/09/2003 19:44

peel, chop, stew (with some sugar if cookers) and freeze. We eat apple puree all year round - delicious on its own, with rice pudding, with brambles, with yoghurt, on cereal, in crumble, in pies, with pancakes, with pork ...

Recipe would be good Podmog. (It was chatting to you during our walk to tesco for coffee that made me want to place this thread ).

Twinkie, we have so many Apples that the ones that fall and stay on the ground for any length of time just get put in the bin. I get the ones at the top down by clearing the ground under the tree, putting out a blanket and shaking the tree like stink until they fall. Any you get like this need to be used smartish due to bruising, but we find that a good shake every so often gives the lawn a few days grace from that apple armageden look.

Codswallop - got a recipe for any particular Apple cake? Will read delia also.

Doormat - too far away to hit David but nice idea.

We are making apple crumble most nights with a friends' excess harvest; I don't understand you guys having trouble knowing what to do with it; the kids & DH can't eat enough.
