I was 21 when I has ds1. That wasn't unusual then (1975) so it wasn't remarked upon. I had dd2 when I was 42, which is certainly much later than any of my contemporaries, but no one has been negative.

18 when I had DS, 20 when I had dd1 and 21 when I had dd2. I am the youngest mum in all their classes, apart from dd2. I am still very young at heart (i'm nearly 27 now) and I think some of the other mums find that offputting (though DH said its the way I dress )

lanismum · 27/10/2005 00:22

25

Charlee · 27/10/2005 01:33

I was 17 im 18 now and i get 'that look' all the time from middle aged and older mums and other people but i just ignore it i know im a good mum and ds is happy and healthy and thats all that counts.

jabberwitchy · 27/10/2005 01:57

Another geriatric mother here! Ds born when I was 38.

floody · 27/10/2005 02:03

ds1 born when i was 27, ds2 born when 29 and dd born when i was 31, i want another but think i may be getting too old now.

undercovermum · 27/10/2005 02:32

I used to think that anyone who had a child under 23 were stupid and not thinking about what their lives were going to be like.

I had DS at 34 and Oh God I wish I was like my mates and sister who had DN at 16. Most of my mates had their babies at 19/20 and they were soooooo right.

I have no energy and am knackered most of the time.

Have your babies in the early 20's. Sod the career!

eidsvold · 27/10/2005 03:07

had my second just after turning 36 - a number in our antenatal group where on no1 and older than me...

foundintranslation · 27/10/2005 03:09

Got pg at 27, had ds 5 months ago, 2 1/2 months after my 28th birthday. Hope to have 2 or 3 more. Like others, I found I was in the middle bracket (slightly on the young side) in my antenatal group. There was one 21-year-old pg with twins. The oldest was, I think, 40 or 41.
I've found it's been about the right age for me.

Maddison · 27/10/2005 08:57

I was 22 when I had DS1 and although nobody commented, I did get a few funny looks.

Had DS2 5 months ago at 26 and had nothing

I was 18, I still get that 'look' sometimes as a very young looking 25yr old, people tend to think my now 7yr old DS is my brother!
I don't really care what others think, I know Im a brill mum, and even at 18 I was very capable.

noddyholder · 27/10/2005 09:02

I was 29 and young considering my other friends Ds is 11 now and most of his friends parents are older than me I am 40 and they are mid to late 40's

tegan · 27/10/2005 09:05

I was 20 when I had dd1 and 26 when dd2 came along

OrribleOliveoil · 27/10/2005 09:08

I was 32 with dd1, 34 with dd2, pondering 3rd now at 35 in between bouts of 'gosh I am broody' versus 'no way, I can't cope with 2' interludes.

Lonelymum · 27/10/2005 09:11

I was 31 and I am glad I had my 20s to myself and had all the carefree years of fun and work. That said though, I think the best time to have your first child would be a bit earlier - say 26 - as I do wonder if my energy levels are lower because I was older, and also, I am now nearly 41 and still have a 2 year old, so by the time he is off my hands, I will be 56 and coming up to retirement!

Serenade · 27/10/2005 09:14

i was 32, but did'nt meet my huband until i was 30 - but still could'nt see myself having a child much younger as had a good career and enjoyed my holidys too much - it's such an individual thing

sweetkitty · 27/10/2005 09:15

Had DD1 at nearly 29

I will be 30 when DD2 is born in January. I wanted them really close together but like JARM have had a few comments about the age gap and most people assume DD2 is a mistake (she wasn't)! Most of my friends haven't started having children yet eithe so I feel a young mum

This has been the perfect time for me personally, I've been to uni, had the career for a few years and feel old enough to have a baby now.

I don't think there is a right time benefits and drawbacks to having babies at 16 or 36.

LilacBump · 27/10/2005 09:16

i was 23. my cousin who had her DD at 19, so i was actually an old mum in the family.

munz · 27/10/2005 09:18

will be 23/24 (baby's due 3rd march my b'days 13th march so depends if he wants us to share!)

35 with ds. would have liked a child when married to xh at 26 but he had a vasectomy instead so there you go. between 16 and 23 would have been shocked at anyone my age having a child but since then i've grown up. for me this is a good age to have a kid but it's personal.

in the 40s Jessica Mitford (fave author) was about to have her fourth child at the age of 30. her friends were amazed that she was planning to have a child so late and told her off, saying 'imagine having a teenager at 45'. these things are completely and purely cultural.
