I've forgotten the rules!!

For dear Sir/Madam is it yours sincerely or faithfully?

sincerely if you have met them
faithfully if you have not met them

doormat · 25/10/2005 14:12

sincerely I think

OrribleOliveoil · 25/10/2005 14:13

It was faithfully when I was at college in about 1945 but I think times have changed and you can now use sincerely.

I was taught to remember it by 'F for forgotten the name, therefore use Faithfully'.

CarolinaFullMoon · 25/10/2005 14:14

I was always told yours faithfully if it's to Dear Sir/Madam. Yours sincerely is for when it's addressed to Dear Mr/Ms X.

If you've met them I guess you'd know their name though...

Zephyrrywitchescat · 25/10/2005 14:16

That's what I was taught too CFM.... but wasn't sure if I had it the right way around!!

So I'm guessing failthfully as it's sir/madam and a complaint to barclays head office so not met them...........yet!

Thanks everyone!

LGJ that site is hilarious - how to open a letter: "Thank you for your letter..."!
