I have finally made the decision to hand my notice in at work. I feel really low generally and have been suffering from terrible pmt, ongoing more pmt than not. This isnt why im jacking in but its clouding my judgement. On one hand I would like to hand my notice in immediately but on the other hand im feeling very weepy and angry and I dont want to look like an incompetent fool who cant cope. So my choices are 1, go into tommorrow and see what happens or 2. go to the doctors and try to get signed off sick and then do it when im less hormonal. So what would you do?

Given the choice I'd do option 2, give yourself what sounds like some much needed down time and then re-assess. You may find there are points about work you actually miss, could you arrange to go back part time even?

spookylucy · 24/10/2005 20:30

Thanks dizzy, ive gone part time but now they are insisting I go back to full time and I just cant face it.

get signed off sick - you sound like you need to take the pressure off.

SenoraPostrophe · 24/10/2005 20:30

also, can they make you go back full time?

Gobbledispook · 24/10/2005 20:31

I'd sign off sick if you really are 'sick' - and you don't have to be typically ill to be 'sick' - stress is a valid reason to be signed off.

Sorry honey really busy but 2

dizzymama · 24/10/2005 20:33

SP is right, can they make you go back full time? Did you sign a contract when you went part time with a set period - I knwo mine is set for a year so just wondering.

Tommy · 24/10/2005 20:37

I would go for the second option. I did this when I was depressed/stressed about work. The GP signed me off for two weeks and then I had two weeks off for holiday. I handed my notice in on the day I came back and, not surprisingly, felt much better! I still had to work out my notice but I didn't care so much anymore and knew I was leaving so it was all much better.
Good luck

Thanks, they cant make me go back but this is Southern Spain and things like workers rights dont exsist in my school even if they exsist in law. They will make my life very difficult.

lucy - see a lawyer before you do anything. well, get signed off sick first, then see a lawyer. employee's rights in spain are much better than in the uk (which is why so many employers employ on the black market). you can probably get a (large) payout for constructive dismissal.

would have mentioned that before but wasn't sure it was you!

dizzymama · 24/10/2005 20:47

Ahh SL, schools, yes, they specialise in making life hard don't they? Mine is the same (although obviously witht the worker's rights) they can't make you do anything but can strongly 'suggest' it. I really feel for you x

spookylucy · 24/10/2005 21:23

Thanks I no workers rights are good but its a bit like Sicily down here. Every school has the right to a representative within the school who cant be sacked whilst they are doing the job and for a year after I think. Noones been brave enough to do the job! Senora, Do you remember Gil? Well the school is run by one of his ex cronies. Very telling I think!

spookylucy · 25/10/2005 08:30

SenoraPostrophe · 25/10/2005 08:46

sorry sl, there was lots of telly on last night!

Blimey - one of Gil's cronies. I see your point.

spookylucy · 25/10/2005 09:21

Well as you've probably guessed I did the cowardly thing and called in sick. I've decided to go to a private doc so there will be no language mix ups. It's amazing the ammount of times that gastroentritus (sp) has been diagnosed at the Urgencia. Anyway this will buy me some time and I can tell them to F off with a bit of dignity.
