Hmmm not sure. I once rang to cancel a DD for council tax and was told they had already called for it and that was about a week before it was due to go out.

She did tell me that they call for it so many days in advance but i can't remember how many.

I would ring the company too i think.

I think if you do it now you will be ok, but I would also ring and tell both that you are cancelling them, just so it doesn't cause any confusion.

Sorry to hear about dp losing his job

charliebat · 24/10/2005 19:58

Its ok, hes getting a wee bit of redundancy and hes looking forward to having a couple of weeks holiday. He never takes holidays/days off and is going to enjoy it before finding a new job.

You should be ok - we recently cancelled all of our DD's (on CAB's advice - helps stop incurring £30 charges for each one when they're refused) - and I'm sure it didn't take that long to stop them.

madmummyof2 · 24/10/2005 23:36

you can stop a DD as long as there is more than 48 hours before it is due to be taken.
you dont need to call them as teh bank will inform them directly

kid · 24/10/2005 23:38

I have to give my bank 24 hours notice (Natwest). Not sure if each bank is different.

Ideally you need to cancel 14 days before it is due ( as many companies start to call a dd between 14 and 5 days before due date ) and you should contact them to tell them that you are cancelling and why because they will want to make arrangements to receive the money from you. If you contact them first they may even offer an alternative option.
