Things you love and hate about London

Yesterday I went to see a friend who has just moved to Berkhamsted from London. The view from the back of her house (all the windows) is absolutely stunning - even though she is on the edge of the town she looks over rolling hills and sheep I kid you not. Anyway, as I drove back to Willesden and its crowded streets and my own house looking over the block of flats at the back (though nice small garden so not moaning) I was thinking:
I LOVE the mix of people here - the fact that my children who are half Indian fit in, the fact that everbody fits in because there is so much diversity here - the fact that I don't think people are over judgmental of or nosey about each other because they all have to get on in this crowded sometimes stressful environment - the parks and playgrounds near my house...
I DON'T LIKE - the houses all stuck close together, the traffic, the lack of fresh air, the stress of never seeing any rolling hills with sheep on them...

I hate the fact that every time I go into london, I come out with a headache.. must be the air there.

FangAche · 21/10/2005 14:29

I like the fact that it's faaaaaaaaar away from here.

ScummyMummy · 21/10/2005 14:30

Love the fact that there are so few sheep in London. They would get in the way.

monkeychops · 21/10/2005 14:40

love the anonimity of city life, no twitching curtains..
Love that there is a huge selection of bars/restaurants/coffee shop and all sorts of entertainment
Love that you can jump on a tube/bus and find yourself in another part of london with lots of trees/greenery etc

Norma2Mates · 21/10/2005 14:42

I love the fact I've got 3 supermarkets and a Boots all within walking distance from my house?

Iklboo · 21/10/2005 14:42

LOVE the fact that taxis actually stop and pick you up, even when it's raining AND take you where you want to go. Not like round here when they either drive past cos they don't fancy stopping or moan when you tell them where you want to go "Bleedin' 'ell love, it's only 5 mins away". "Yes love I know, but I'm due to give birth next week and this shopping if fricking HEAVY".

HATE it being more expensive

JoolsToo · 21/10/2005 14:43

fangache !!! couldn't agree more

hornbag · 21/10/2005 14:44

Love the diversity of people, food, shops etc (sadly lacking where we live)
Hate the fact that when you've been to London and blow your nose your tissue is full of black snot! What must it do to your body, breathing in all that crap, day in, day out....

Norma2Mates · 21/10/2005 14:44

?and I hate it when the tubes aren't running and the bus takes 2 hours to get you to work (if you can actually get on that is).

motherinferior · 21/10/2005 15:01

Another lover of the lack of sheep here. Sheep highly overrated IMO. Prefer shops. And libraries. And people.

FangAche · 21/10/2005 15:02

I hate the NORF LAAAAANDAAAAAAN accent.

interstella · 21/10/2005 15:03

I love that from where i live in London I can be walking my dog in a beautiful forest, while my ds has a ride from the stables there at 9.30am,by lunchtime we can be a fab free museum, having a walk by the river, playing in a gorgeous park, looking round amazing shops, browsing round a wonderful organic market, looking at old and beautiful buildings, eating in good cheap and diverse restaurants ,going to just one of the brilliant kids theatres, then we go home to an area where sooo many different races and religions live side by side harmoniously and after tea we are just five minutes away from wandering the marshes, spotting rare butterflies and moths, watching the kestrals and herons, pond dipping or after dark going on a torch lit bat walk .I love London.I dont like the traffic or Ken putting up bus fares but there is so much diversity here and the myth that its all aggro and tension and violence constantly is not valid.Oh,and we live in a not so desirable area, and our combined family income is £29 k.

Marina · 21/10/2005 15:04

Huge choice of theatres. And museums. And music venues. These are all LOVES by the way. Also our massive array of parks - some of them tatty, but there is so much greenery in South London, at least.
Am also only 1 hour from Eurotunnel for when it all gets too much...

intergalacticwalrus · 21/10/2005 15:05

I hate the fact that lots of Londoners have 2nd homes here, and as a result we are priced out of the market

I hate mockneys

I hate London, becuse it's where my twatty ex p lives.

I do love the mix of people there though.

nailpolish · 21/10/2005 15:05

I hate the way I start walking faster as soon as I get off the train in London.

fairyfly · 21/10/2005 20:36

I hate nothing, dislike the arrogance of london, the fact it is suppossed to be a special place, every bloody city is great

milward · 21/10/2005 20:39

London is too busy & noisy for me - all the crowds everywhere. The going out & not seeing anyone I know just on the off chance. All the concrete & roads. Couldn't cope with this every day. Do love though all the choice of events, shops & things to do. Have no shops like the London stores near me - if I did would have a super wardrobe!!

I loved walking over the Thames at 5 in the morning after a night out clubbing, the fact I never felt unsafe what ever time of night it was. I loved the fact that there was something for everyone, what ever you wanted to do.

Loved the musuems and the best parks in the entire world, all different and welcoming.

Loved being able to walk everywhere and if you overdid it then you jumped on the tube.

Loved being in my twenties there, but now love being in my thirties and miss it not at all.

edam · 21/10/2005 20:46

oh Majorca, I love the river too - used to live just 100 yards away. Sob.

Love the view from Hungerford Bridge/Waterloo Bridge. Love the view of Albert Bridge. And the sheer excitement of London.

Hate the hassle. The effort it takes to do ANYTHING. And crime. That's why we moved.

koalabear · 21/10/2005 21:07

I hate the fact that every morning, I sit on the tube, and look at people with backpacks

I love the fact that people queue for things

I hate the fact that everything seems to take a LONG TIME

I love the fact that you have people from every where, every nationality, every country, every creed, every race working side by side and laughing about stuff

stripey · 21/10/2005 21:21

I love London. Its so vibrant. Everything is here - I'm not a country sort of person.
