I like the look of that Hell's Bay or Mouth (??)Hotel.
I've told dh we have to go in the near future.
Whol ives there mostly (ie locals or incomers) and what do they do?
Tourism industry jobs I suppose?

ScarySkribble · 18/10/2005 20:55

I look out across a river with a hill in the background with grazing horses. You can walk beside river both directions and its lovely in the evening sun.

My family are from Aberdeen and dp had never ever been to Scotland so I got hiom to drive us up to Aberdeen, then from there I took him to Ballater, Banchory to the Mar lodge and the ski school (was very scary up there as was the heaviest snow for years!) THen we went across to Inverness, Fort William, up the side of Loch Ness and finally up to Ullapool. It was absolutely amazing and felt like I'd found home. The photo's we have from there are like postcards.

It's my dream to see the Northern Lights one day.

Zephyrrywitchescat · 18/10/2005 20:58

(Meant to add add braemar where the lodge is)

dinny · 18/10/2005 20:58

Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher
more and more second-home owners now (or FMLs - f*ing mainlanders as they are known in some quarters )

yes, main industry now tourism. Used to be flowers wheN I was dd's age. my Mum and Dad have small business - our family have had our shop for generations (I am amazingly inbred really!)

Canadian Rockies

Journey from Lake Tekapo to Queenstown on South Island, New Zealand

French Alps

But gorgeous Borrowdale in the Lakes makes me tingle more than anywhere else I've been. I think choices like these are partly about the beauty of the area and partly about memories aren't they...[dreamy emoticon needed]

Nice thread

moondog · 18/10/2005 22:11

Second home owners dinny. Grrrrrr

Aren't there limits on them?

Buddhamummy · 18/10/2005 22:36

Guernsey, mid september, cliff walking. The warm sun on your skin, sparking sea one side and juicy blackberries to nibble on the other.

Milge · 18/10/2005 22:39

Another vote for Western Scotland, esp Isle of Mull.
Mayan Peninsula, Mexico
Whitsunday Islands, Australia
Cardigan Bay, Wales

moondog · 18/10/2005 22:40

Cardigan Bay is dh's home turf milge. You're right,it's gorgeous.

suedonim · 18/10/2005 23:01

Lol @ Grimsby, Moondog! Yes, the lights come in different types. Search lights are what it says on the box, in varying colours. Curtains are when the entire sky is washed with colour. A corona is a semi circle of light with points of light shooting out round the top edge, bit like a tiara. The lights sometimes pulsate and change colour constantly, too. I once saw a fantastic display when flying home overnight from New York to Scotland. Even though we know what causes them I think they are still stunning and magical. This link has some info on the different forms of northern lights.
