I am helping to set up a not-for-profit website for parents which anyone can add to. The idea is that everyone contributes their opinions on their local schools and places to go etc (Having just moved house I know how invaluable this sort of information is and how difficult it is to find). If the plan works then the site should become a great source of reference for parents.

At the moment I am having difficulty getting any objective feedback and wondered whether you could have a look here and tell me what you think?

THANKS!

PS I hope I am not breaking any rules here - please let me know if I am (I am a member but not sure about the netiquette)

like the idea. and the website layout is great!

OK. Will have a proper look after I've put ds to bed but intitial thoughts:

  1. Blokes might not be keen on the name 'Mothershare' (DP makes comments about 'Mumsnet' because he is the main carer and thinks parenting sites should not be biaed towards Mums). BUT, having said that, I think Mothershare has a good ring to it.

  2. I don't know what a wiki is - might be worth explaining

  3. Might be worth putting something in the thread about it not being a 'rival' to MN or some people might get upset.

  4. Do you want anyone to write some stuff about Bradford/West Yorks area - I would be willing. What would I have to do ?

Will look more in a bit. Great idea.

I agree it looks good on the outset. Maybe different name or a dads section or something??????
Will have a better look when dsis in bed

  1. I am thinking of changing the name eg parentshare
  1. A wiki is just a website that anyone can edit

  2. This is NOT a rival to Mumsnet. I even put a link to mumsnet on the site because it is so good. It is from chatting on this discussion board that it occurred to me that there is lots of info that Mums give more more than once on the threads and it would be great to put it in one place.

  3. Please add some info for Yorkshire/W Bradford - I can set up a new area page for you and then you just click on the edit tab at the top to write in the info (in a box a bit like the Add the Message box here)

Thanks for looking

Witchycat I have set up a template West Yorks/Brad area for you to have a go. Don't be scared - if you make a mistake you can delete it by editing the page again.

Thanks manicmama. I've just finished off some work so I'm tired & I'm not going to get to the website tonight but I will try & write some stuff as soon as I get a chance.
I'm thinking about reviews of child-friendly places to eat, indoor activity centres, swimming pools - that sort of thing. Does that sound useful?

Perfect! Have a relaxing evening.

excellent idea I'd have loved something like that before we move
I'd do South Lincs for you

manicmama · 11/10/2005 21:16

That's brilliant Piffle. Do you want me to set up a template? (I also have a friend who has just moved to Leicestershire so she might join in!)

Whoops - must be tired Lincs is NOT Leics! Sorry

I couldn't get onto the link to have a look it said can't find server. It sounds like a good idea but pretty similar to what netmums already does.

I found netmums very useful when I moved house with a young child.

manicmama - hi - I've just tried writing an entry under the 'Museums' area but I've managed somehow to place it straight under the Bradford/West Yorks heading.
Can I amend - how? or can you amend ?

Also - the comments I've written are from a personal perspective - does it sound ok or do you want it to sound more 'professional' - less personal if you see what I mean?

PS - it should be Bradford/West Yorks - not West Bradford/Yorks

manicmama · 12/10/2005 18:05

Witchycat - sorry not to have replied sooner - have been at work. Good first attempt at editing! I know it is a bit odd to begin with.

I have corrected the Yorkshire/Brad page so that it has gone back to the template area and renamed the page you did as BD2 Bradford Industrial Museum.

To add a new page under the Yorkshire Bradford page you do the following:

  1. Click edit tab at top
  2. In edit box, scroll down to correct title eg !Museums
  3. Insert name of new page in double brackets eg ((BD2 Bradford Industrial Museum))
  4. Click save button
  5. Scroll down Yorkshire Bradford page until you see the title of the new page with a blue question mark at the end eg BD2 Bradford Industrial Museum?
  6. click on the blue question mark
  7. A new page will appear for you to enter the details of that venue

When you have finished save the work. Go to back to the Yorkshire/Brad page and refresh and you will now have created a new link.

Hope that makes sense and you are willing to give it another shot!

Your comments were great. They can be personalised but if poss. then you should register so the viewer knows who has edited the page (a record of the contributor appears on the history page)

Thanks again and do let me know if you need any more help.

Thanks to Witchycat for adding some pages.

If anyone else has an opinion about their local nursery/school/museum etc that they can't be bothered to add themselves, but they are happy for me to put in the database please let me know!
