Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else is into Geocaching. I find it a great way of getting out of the house & exploring the countryside, with and without the rest of the family! There are some interesting places locally I would have never though to visit without being lead there!

Fully expect a zero response from you lot of "far to cool for anything so nerdy" ladies. Smile

Do an advanced search - there are lots of geo-cachers on here Smile

GypsyMoth · 27/01/2011 15:36

Yes us!!!

Have had threads on this, but another one is welcome!

Lots come on asking what it is, so are then new converts too. My toddler up to teens all love this. Gets us out to places we would not otherwise have gone to.

GypsyMoth · 27/01/2011 15:37

Oh, and it's not nerdy!!

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:38

Ahh, thanks deepdarkwood

Who'd have though so many have tried it! Been at it about 2 years or so, found about 1200, so I'm a beginner really.

Treasure hunting :o

We have been doing it for a few years now and still enjoying it very much, makes a walk so much more fun and yes you discover all these new places.

GypsyMoth · 27/01/2011 15:39

That's slot more than what we have got!! Have pretty much given up over the winter but plan to get out again soon.

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:40

I even namechanged as I was a little embarassed [shame], about being a tad geeky!

BadBagel · 27/01/2011 15:41

1200 Shock

and you call yourself a beginner :)

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:41

Blush not [shame] obviously!

1200, well, novice(ish). I quite often meet fellow cachers (by accident) on my trails, several are in the 5K plus!

I have 5 kids in tow when I go, so takes a bit of organisation!!! And they all shriek 'found it'!!!!

So much for being discreet!

BadRoly · 27/01/2011 15:44

Yes, but nt very good and my dh doesn't get it

BadBagel · 27/01/2011 15:45

We are on 650 and I thought we were quite advanced :o

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:46

Our 2 DCs enjoy it when the weather is fair and the caches not too hard to find, but in mud and wind, well that's another story!

OP posts:
BadBagel · 27/01/2011 15:47

Tiffany :o that's what our kids do too.

SiriusStar · 27/01/2011 15:47

How do you get started?

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:49

badbagel, I take it you're on this page then!

this page

Sirius, have a look at www.geocaching.com It should explain the basics and it is free.

(sorry don't know how to do links)

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:52

A handheld GPS that can show coordinates in (phone, TomTom, or "proper", but cheap & cheerful) and joining www.geocachers.com for free. There is premium membership, but you don't need that.

OP posts:
SiriusStar · 27/01/2011 15:55

Do you have to have a gps?

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 15:55

sorry proper, but cheep & cheerful handheld GPS such as:-

www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-eTrex-Handheld-GPS-Navigator/dp/B000PDV0CE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296143618&sr=8-1

I use the TomTom One Sat Nav from my car still!

SiriusStar you can GeoCache without a GPS (using google map printouts, or your phone) it just makes it a lot more difficult.

OP posts:
BadBagel · 27/01/2011 15:57

Geo, actually on the page before that, we haven't quite reached the 650 mark yet it seems :)

Strawbezza · 27/01/2011 15:59

I love geocaching, started in 2008 and found a cache this morning in the cold! Great game.

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 16:02

I think it only gets updated a couple of times a week, so you could be on the next page if you've been busy this week Grin.

No names I'm familiar on that page though Smile
