Geocaching, anyone into this outdoor GPS based hobby

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else is into Geocaching. I find it a great way of getting out of the house & exploring the countryside, with and without the rest of the family! There are some interesting places locally I would have never though to visit without being lead there!

Fully expect a zero response from you lot of "far to cool for anything so nerdy" ladies. Smile

Well as we are closer to the 600 mark than the 650 I think I think it might be a bit longer than a week before we get there :o

We mostly cache in the hampshire/surrey/berkshire area.

SoupDragon · 27/01/2011 16:50

Yes, I'm in my 3rd year of caching.

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 19:39

BadBagel - Only done a few caches in the South East, when holidaying with the family. Most of ours are in the East Midlands.

Actually, I started caching because of a mumsnet thread.

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 20:12

SoupDragon great, a convert. I think it was an article on Countryfile (I don't watch it normally Smile) which introduced it to me.

Have you placed any?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 27/01/2011 20:43

Yes, I"ve placed about 32 I think :)

GeoCaching · 27/01/2011 20:46

32! My you're keen and a good cacher, much better than me. I'm afraid my ratio of finds to hides is pitiful! Blush, only got a handfull of caches. Must do better!

I really want to start. It's my birthday next week and I have hinted very very heavily about a handheld GPS and put it on my Amazon wishlist, but DH isn't entirely convinced yet. It sounds ideal though - treasure hunts for DS and new walks for the dogs....

BadBagel · 27/01/2011 21:51

spiderlight it makes going for walks so much more fun as you have something to aim for rather than doing the same old trail everytime.
When DH mentioned it the first time I wasn't convinced either but once we done the first one we were hooked :)

Geo, we haven't cached in your part of the country yet.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2011 11:38

I have been out this morning and replaced 2 of my caches which had gone missing in action. Without caching, I would have spent the morning sitting at my kitchen table with the iPad.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2011 11:40

spiderlight, consider these two statements:

Hey! Let's go for a walk!
Hey! Let's go on a treasure hunt!

One is a walk, one is what a walk becomes when you take up geocaching. I have also discovered places I never knew existed. It's been fabulous.

GeoCaching · 28/01/2011 13:47

It's been a lovely morning, managed to bag a few, including a Multi, after doing the weekly shop! Not too muddy as the ground was still a bit frozen. Smile

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2011 18:26

theres great satisfaction watching travelbugs, geocoins etc move across the world too,i find!!

GeoCaching · 28/01/2011 19:08

My one and only, beautiful, ornate GeoCoin is lost in the States. The person who found it 6 months ago is not returning my emails Sad

OP posts:
BadBagel · 28/01/2011 19:14

We seem to have lost 3 TB's :(

Sixty, give it a try! Make sure you start with a regular size cache, a nice size box, so the kids can take some goodies from it.

GypsyMoth · 29/01/2011 16:05

right,i'm inspired to get back out there now!!

doing the couch to 5k at the moment,so plan to combine a run tomorrow, with a few caches afterwards!!

dc are pleased!! need to top up the loot bag tho

NortyNewNew · 29/01/2011 16:10

Too cold today, might have a go tomorrow though

SoupDragon · 29/01/2011 17:04

All my maintenance is done, bar one particularly tricky custom made cache which I'm finding hard to replicate.

Now I need to plan some to find tomorrow.

FourFingeredKitkat · 30/01/2011 16:15

10 found today!

ChippyMinton · 30/01/2011 16:24

Hi all - my DC saw geo-caching on the TV the other day and were excited about it. I have a garmin sat-nav for the car - could I use that to get us started?

GypsyMoth · 30/01/2011 19:54

10 kitkat!!!

today we were searching....and 2 year old ds found it!!! it was attached to a bottle top pushed into the ground!

FourFingeredKitkat · 30/01/2011 20:20

ChippyMinton We still use our TomTom from the car. So long as you can remove it, the battery life is long enough and you can see coordinates in the form N34° 40.467 E033° 02.744 then you'll be OK. We've done over 1200 this way!

FourFingeredKitkat · 30/01/2011 20:23

Sorry, just realised I've name changed mid thread, apologies! I'm "GeoCaching" BTW Smile

chimchar · 30/01/2011 20:38

We found 3 locally this afternoon and had a really great time.

Are very much beginners, and have had quite a few problems i'n finding caches. Have found reading the hints/clues really helped.
