For the last week we have had hundreds of flies at each window swarming about, making loads of noise - I have been repeatedly attacking them with a flyswatter - its soooooooo annoying - at times we cant open the windows at all for fear of loads of them coming in..............

Its driving me nutty - HAs anyone else got this problem? What should we do to avoid it in future?

we have these

wouldn't mind but they just will not go away and i do not live in squallor!!!!

Littlefish · 08/10/2005 20:40

I had this problem several years ago. I found out that it was in the whole area where I lived. Unfortunately, the supermarkets all ran out of flyspray, fly swats etc. Someone told me that flies don't like Lavender, so I burned Lavender in my vapouriser thingy and it seemed to keep them away.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

we don't, but dp's parents did when we were down in devon a few weeks ago... horrible!

Laura032004 · 08/10/2005 21:26

We've got lots too if it's any consolation. They seem really dopey, but I can't bring myself to swap them. It's horrible!

happymerryberries · 08/10/2005 21:26

No, but we have loads of spiders....which might explain the lack of flies!

busybusybee · 08/10/2005 21:31

Laura - Ours are dopey too - We have got loads of them - I opened a window yesterday and 30 flew in - the window was only open for about 3 seconds

This time of year you do tend to get a lot of flies - they come in from outdoors as the temperature drops. Then they die.
It does vary a lot. One August we got a horrible infestation of flying ants which are even worse!

philippat · 08/10/2005 21:33

apparently more flies is yet another result of global warming...

Laura032004 · 08/10/2005 21:34

busybusybee - Aaaarrrghgh! We've got about 3 a day! Poor you. Are they little ones or big ones? We keep getting swarms of the little ones outside, which is horrible when we're in the garden.

busybusybee · 08/10/2005 21:42

They are little to start with - hundreds of those - then they grow and become normal sized flies - sometimes literally hundreds of them at each window!!!!!!!!

About this time last year when i was 8 months pregnant i came home to find kitchen FULL of flys, hundreds of them all bashing the window, boy did i freak! but found out from vet friend of mine horrible truth behind it! apparantly one or two flys probably landed on our cats food, or food bowl, laid there eggs which yuk yuk yuk can then either hatch from a coughed up fur ball or a litter tray if used indoors.

I'm so glad to read this thread. I've got the beetles infestation.

I was beginning to worry. It doesn't matter what I do they won't go away. I hoovered under the couch and there were some there. Yuccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!! So if anyone knows how to get rid of the buggers once and for all I'll be truly grateful!

busybusybee · 10/10/2005 22:05

Buddhamummy - thankyou for your post! That info has made me realise what is happening to us - the flies lay their eggs in the window frames - then hatch and go potty buzzing all over the place

I opened a window today - 30 flies flew out of the frame, a load more loitered about indoors.

Later on they started swarming AGAIN! outside the lounge door - then about a hundred of the babies decided to take a rest on the inside of our BEDROOM window.................... [vomit emotion]

I've done some research and apparently the best thing I can do... which I have already despatched DH to do, is to give the carpets a good steam and shampoo.

Oh the joys... so I'm gonna visit my sister with the kids and DH will be here sorting the carpets!

Next time I'm having a wooden floor!
