I'm looking to organise one of these myself in the next few months as there is none organised in my area that I can find. Has anyone organised one and can give me any tips? my other question is will people wonder why it's not for a charity etc.?

we did one as our first pta event, it wasn't done as a fundraiser as such - we sold table space and sellers kept their profits.

it was hard work - lots of advertising required but found lots of free opportunities to do this - facebook; local radio; newspapers; shop windows and billboards on lampposts on the day.

we did have free hire of hall so the table fees (£5) was ours. helpers were given a free table in return for helping with the lead up.

we also gave an A4 sellers guide - ways to maximise profit and stressed it was a "nearly new" not carboot.

its a lot harder if you want to run it like an NCT sale but the rewards are huge i guess. a local playgroup do this and can take 1000's in commission.

my other tip is if there are local nct sales or similar avoid clashing with dates - people will travel for these. My research suggested that March/April and september/october were the busiest times for sales. We now do a general tabletop in June time and then a nearly new toy one in early november.

Thanks twinklytoes - good tips. Definitely going to do table top as opposed to NCT style. I thought £5 per table was reasonable too. If you don't mind me asking what kind of profit did you get for your pta table top?

we made about £400 on the first one. this was made up of table sales; our own table and refreshments. sale lasted for two hours.

our overheads were low though - actually only had to pay out for tea, coffee and milk. the stuff we sold was donations in return for a non-uniform day at school.
