My friend has been offered a (well paid) job in Barnsley. He has a girlfriend who speaks very basic English and is pregnant. He currently lives in London with no job. Is there lots for families and kids in Barnsley? Is there stuff other stuff? Restaurants, pubs, cinemas etc.? Any information gratefully received.

There's lovely countryside around Barnsley. It's a smallish town, but you can get to Sheffield easily for city stuff like theatres and art galleries and (yawn) one of the country's biggest malls. Barnsley does have restaurants, yes (used to waitress in one when I was at sixth form) and pubs and all that. Some parts are rough, but it's the same anywhere really. Personally I'd live in one of the villages and travel in to work but has been years since I lived in that part of the country so may be out of date on this. Penistone's a really nice very small market town nearby. Avoid Hoyland, IME (but again, may be out of date).

Haven't been there for years, but the one outstanding thing about Barnsley used to be how clean it was - don't know who cleaned the streets but they shone!

Oh, avoid Wombwell too. Unless you are a very down to earth dyed in the wool Yorkshireman, which I'm guessing your friend isn't.

Don't believe there is such a thing as a well paid job in Barnsley! It is an old ex- mining town - very 'down to earth' and rough and ready in places, but Barnsley folk have hearts of gold, no nonsense type folk.
Avoid Lundwood & Cudworth at all costs. Huddersfield side of Barnsley has v nice villages.
Good leisure centre (Metrodome), Football Team (???) market and shopping.

CAT nbg, she is the fountain of all things Barnsley.

Ericblack · 07/10/2005 21:06

gingerbear: What does CAT mean? I can't find it on the acronym list and haven't been around on MN that long.

Ericblack · 13/10/2005 20:50

Thanks Trace2. Sorry, I've been off MN for the last few days. Didn't mean to be rude and not reply. My friend is trying to decide whether to take the plunge and leave London. I think his main problem is that his girlfriend is Brazilian and doesn't speak much English so might be isolated away from London. Thanks for the CAT offer. I will definitely take it up when he's finally made up his mind.

His wife would probably be more welcome here more than london as we are a very friendly lot

trace2 · 13/10/2005 20:55

Ericblack · 19/10/2005 22:15

"Friend" is actually my brother who is taking bloody ages to decide. Thanks Trace for replying again. I'm saying the same to him. He's deciding (so he says) tomorrow. Used to live in Aberdeen so how bad could Barnsley be I say having lived in Aberdeen for 20 years of my life.
