dh says the home page thing sounds like a corrupt hosts file.

the websites: can you not get to any ebay page, or can you just not log in? It is quite common for windows to chuck a wobbly that results in no secure pages being accessable.

prob isn't a virus if none of those picked it up (I take it they are all updated regularly).

when did you last do a windows update?

Have you tried Ad-aware? It's freeware but it's excellent. It find all the malware and data miners and bad cookies that the virus scanners don't seem to pick up. I run it regularly and it always finds something even though I am paranoid about security!

I also use the Mozilla Firefox browser which is brilliant. Blocks popups etc...

It probably isn't adware, but ad aware is better than spybot for picking it up.

go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open the file called hosts in notepad. it should be readable - if there are any entries below the # bit other than

127.0.0.1 localhost

then delete them. you may need to restart your machine afterwards.

failing that, try updating windows and ie - upgrade it if you don't have the latest version (IE that is. or switch to firefox)

I had a major problem with my computer last month. I run uptodate virus checkers, but when talking to technical support people, they said that unless I keep my windows totally uptodate, they are useless. Also, my problem was not a virus, but adaware. I downloaded a trail version of something and then paid up for it later as it was very effective. You can get some free ones though. They find totally different stuff on your computer than the virus checkers.
