Our cat aged 16 went missing at end of November. He enjoyed being outdoors but never wandered far from home. we found his body seven miles from home on a remote moorside with what looks like a stab wound in his torso. I could see no other trauma. We retrieved his frozen body and buried him in the garden. The only explanation I can think of is that some psycho took him and did this to him? SHould I report this to the police or will they think I am being paranoid

so sorry for you. it is possible he was attacked or injured himself on something and then went off to die.

Lynli · 10/01/2011 13:54

Thats awful, I am so sorry.

Yes report it.

victoriah3 · 10/01/2011 13:56

No - he wouldn't have gone that far away form home - he was found by cahnce bu my sister's dog whem thet were out walking. I think it is foul play as he was very fit for his age and had lots of life left in him. I think he was dumped bu someone and they though he would not be found in this remote location

Oh God I am so sorry, I can't think of a sadder way to find your poor cat Sad

So sorry. Yes, report. It's the sort of thing where they might have had a few similar events but not be able to figure it out - the more info the better.

victoriah3 · 10/01/2011 14:01

Yes I will report it - there may be a pattern of similar events that can be linked together. Is it an offence to murder a pet? I guess what I mean is will it be taken seriously?

victoriah when cats get nearer to th end of their time they can wander further from home to find a spot. this may have been why he was so far away, and if he was very old he may have gotten lost and kept travelling in a bid to find his way back.

Eleison · 10/01/2011 14:03

How awful. Would it be worth talking to your vet to see if s/he thought any other explanation for the injury was possible?

Probably you should report it, because it might form part of a pattern of other cases of attack. Though I can understand that it would be very distressing for you to have to encounter police and RSPCA bureaucracy on this -- and the likelhood is that they won't do anything.

I found a deer slaughtered by a cruel trap. told the RSPCA, offered to take them there, emailed a photo. And they did nothing.

Don't think I ill ever know the truth but at least he is laid to rest with some dignity. Will try and remember him purring on my lap

I am so sorry this has happened to your cat. Are you sure he didn't get a branch stuck in him somehow. We had a cat with what looked like a stab wound on its stomach but the vet said in all likelihood he probably jumped off something on to a broken branch or a bit of metal. Eventually we discovered a bit of sharp plastic poking out through the fence he used to go through and think he probably speared himself on that.Fortunately for us he was fine after lots of treatment as he didn't puncture something vital.
Your cat may have hurt himself and then wandered off as he was traumatised.
If I were you I'd phone the RSPCA for some advice if you want to know for sure.

CabbagefromaBaby · 10/01/2011 14:11

You often, sadly, see things like this in the press so yes I believe the police will log it and take it seriously.

The RSPCA have a reputation for not acting unless a camera crew is present Sad

I wouldn't bother with them.
