Ideas for my mum's 70th please?!

Hello and Happy New Year to you all Smile

My mum will be 70 in March, and has been dropping heavy references to her 'big day' to one of my sisters.
(She's clearly decided she is to be the chief organiser.) When sis asked what she'd like, she said she would be happy with a meal at a Chinese restaurant but that is clearly not the truth!

We've thought about a weekend away, (her plus us 3 sisters) perhaps somewhere central like Stratford on Avon, as 2 of us are in London and the others in the Midlands. Nominated sis has also suggested hiring a boat but I'd imagine it to be a bit bracing in early March Confused

There are likely to be just 3 of us splitting the bill so we'd like to keep it under £400, definitely can't manage more than £500.

Mum is a fairly quiet but intelligent soul who enjoys books, history, wildlife and the countryside. She's reasonably healthy but not too energetic so we want her to have fun without exhausting her!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received Smile

weekend or overnight in london, tea at the ritz or the savoy??

marriednotdead · 02/01/2011 19:51

Thanks catsmamma.

I think sis took her for tea at the Ritz a few years ago.

Mum lived in London until about 3 years ago so it may be a bit of a busmans' holiday IYSWIM, that's why we were trying to think of somewhere neutral.

Ooh, more ideas, ta Smile

hercomesthesciencebint- the first things you mention sound great so will definitely look into them.

She organised a hot air balloon for my 40th- she's scared of heights so decided I could be scared on her behalf. Doesn't have any interest in her personal appearance- not been to a hairdresser in 40 years Shock Usually cuts it herself although she let me a couple of times.

cat64, sadly my mum's final choice of partner was not compatible with friendships. She has occasional contact with my godmother and an ex colleague. Apart from us, that's it Sad

She sounds awful reading back, but she's not that bad, just made a couple of lousy choices...

Hay-on-Wye literary festival? Late spring/early summer, IIRC

Bath? Always lots going on there.

Bath Literature Festival runs from 25 Feb - 6 March. Its a fantastic and varied event with performances, debates and music as well as the usual literary talks. Easy travelling distance from a stay in the Cotswolds or Somerset too!
