Why won't the igniter on my cooker work?

Hayls · 29/09/2005 19:23

Bl**dy cooker is playing up and I could really dow othout calling somebody out. The igniter just isn't sparking at all. It plugs into a normal electrical socket and the timer, clock etc are working OK so I don't think there's a problem with that. There's no prob with the gas supply either. Instruction book was absolutely no help at all!
Total long shot but can anyone think of something else that I could sort myself?
TIA (hoping!)

I dont know how to solve your problem but my mums doesnt work either and she bought a cheap gas igniter thingy (good description - dont know its real name!) - it is long and made of plastic/metal and when you press the button it produces a spark to light your gas.

edgetop · 29/09/2005 19:35

that has happened to our hob we just used a lighter.

WigWamBam · 29/09/2005 19:39

Same here - one of my rings stopped working so I use a cheap gas igniter thingie on that one ring.

Hayls · 29/09/2005 19:39

I've got one of the long igniter thingys but our oven has a safety thing on it and it won't light with it. It is a double oven and I shoudl be able to do it on the small one according to instrcution sbut I can't find the source of the gas for that or the grill (turn gas on and wildly stick igniter in and nothing happens . I can get the hob to work but it's the oven I need!

Are they run with a battery? My gas cooker must be

janeybops · 29/09/2005 19:45

i was going to say change the battery but someone beat me to it.

monstersmummy · 29/09/2005 19:50

this may sound daft but have u a button that u have to press for the gas to be released? And is it pressed? I have one and forget to push the button down lots!!

Also try blowing the rings to clear the bit where the spark should come from in case its got dirt in. Obviously not while the gas is coming thru lol!

Hayls · 30/09/2005 10:48

Any ideas where the battery might be? Still no luck and I can't use my oven or grill . Would it need a separate battery even if it connects to the electricity? I need pizza tonight! And dd wants to make fairy cakes today.
Apologies, this must be one of the most boring topics EVER

underneath your oven, there should be another compartment that you can open. That is where the battry is!! It usually takes a c size battery, well mine did when mine went!!! Nearly cried after getting the MIL's friend round as thought it was knackered!! They just looked at me in bemusement for not knowing.!!!
if you don't find the opening bit at bottom, then you may have a problem

butty · 30/09/2005 11:08

sorry, that should say below your oven compartment, not beneath it!!!!

sansouci · 30/09/2005 11:08

use a match.

Hayls · 30/09/2005 11:12

NO child stuck in it. Tried NHS Direct but they told me that unless I burnt myself trying to light it with a match they couldn't help. Durex Rub, gas and sparks not a good combination so I'm going with BUtty's suggestion.

BUtty, do you mean on the outside of the oven or within it? I'm so desperate to sort it out. DH keeps screaming at me for sticking my head in the oven with an igniter trying to light it.

oh, mn makes me lol. thanks, ladies.

butty · 30/09/2005 11:17

at the bottom of the cooker(below oven) on mine, there is a compartment that you can open to store pots and pans in.
I did'nt know it existed, bit just investigate the lower half of your cooker and hopefully you will find it!!!!
the battery is in there.
Good luck!!

try below the oven door on the exterior of cooker, it should hopefully be there.
