i have found out that she drinks a lot. mostly beer, but i am quite concerned, especially as she is breastfeeding
her baby is very small for its age. she also doesn't sleep much and i think is driving the mum to drink

what should i do?

How did you find out?

Mytwopenceworth · 25/09/2005 21:31

You could try saying YOU are tired etc, kind of say general stuff that you think she might relate to, ask her if she has ever felt like that - might give her the opportunity to open up.

crystaltips · 25/09/2005 21:32

baby is probably not sleeping properly - because it's not getting all the goodness it needs - and waking up with a hangover [not joking here - emotion ] !

WigWamBam · 25/09/2005 21:32

How much do you call a lot? Is she drinking all day, or just at night time?

wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 21:32

These sort of people don't deserve to have children

What's the dad like, is he supportive

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:35

crystaltips i think you're right. i don't want to scare her off by saying too much iykwim

i think she may have a nasty side!

wmf, i am not sure about the dad... he sounds like he spends a lot of time on the internet playing games and stuff

wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 21:36

Bloody moron he wants to grow up and take some responsibility

Frayedknot · 25/09/2005 21:37

Do you know whether she had a drink problem before she had the baby? I would have thought it was unlikely she would just suddenly start drinking a lot because the baby didn't sleep well, if she hadn't already (ab)used alcohol before.

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:38

think mum may be down because of lack of attention from him. he's dashingly handsome... think he's a bit of a ladies man

OP posts:
starlover · 25/09/2005 21:39

well i know that she used to enjoy some wild nights out... she has mentioned that before. she used to go out with her dh and when they got back they would get alcohol delivered to the house

perhaps they both have a problem

aloha · 25/09/2005 21:40

What is a lot?

wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 21:41

is she a happy person in general?

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:42

well she said to someone i know that she was worried that the baby would have a hangover if she stopped, althuogh that is just heresay

OP posts:
starlover · 25/09/2005 21:42

yes she seems quite happy most of the time

OP posts:
wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 21:44

Even when sober?

crystaltips · 25/09/2005 21:44

sorry - I have 3 alcoholics in my family and they are at varying stages of alcoholic dependency .... "being happy" - might mean "half - cut" so watch out !
Sorry

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:45

tbh i am not sure i have ever seen her sober now thinking about it

sorry to hear that crystaltips... must be very hard for you

i don't know how best to help her

OP posts:
starlover · 25/09/2005 21:47

she mentioned to me that she has at LEAST 3 pints a night, but have a feeling that it is more.
i must have seemed a bit concerned because she then said it was shandy... again not sure she was telling the truth

OP posts:
wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 21:52

Does she drink alone?

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:53

i think she drinks with her dh a lot, but if he isn't there i guess she does it alone too

OP posts:
starlover · 25/09/2005 21:54

apparently he goes out every sunday morning and i think she drinks then as well

OP posts:
tillykins · 25/09/2005 21:58

perhaps you could alert her GP / HV?

starlover · 25/09/2005 22:02

yeah i might do that

OP posts:
wheresmyfroggy · 25/09/2005 22:05

I would .
