I have 3 that sit in my mind.

The first is "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. It reminds me of when I lived in a flat in Birmingham and had lots of different men on the go (those were the days!!) and all I had to worry about was what drink I was going to have in the pub.

The next is "Dancing on the Floor", by Third World as it reminds me of a bloke I had an exciting and illicit fling with, as he played it in his car a lot

And the third is "Black Night" by Deep Purple, as it reminds me of when I was a student. Enough said really!!!!!

Wordsmith love that!
Ours was We will, we will WASH YOU! We will, we will SCRUB YOU!
We had a good thread going some time ago about daft songs we sing to our children. Will see if I can find it in Ye Archives

Marina · 23/09/2005 14:57

For all those who sing ridiculous songs to their children, derived or not from popular classics here
Unsurprisingly started by the Queen of the Icelandic Deeps

I have just listened to Marvin Gayes "Sexual Healing" and just had to laugh at the first line I had never really noticed before..."I'm hot just like an oven"-not so romantic if MY oven!

bonym · 23/09/2005 17:45

Loads, but the one that first springs to mind is "Come On Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners. I was 16 and my first ever boyfriend bought me the album because I loved that song.

antibes · 23/09/2005 17:48

chumbawumba - reminds me of girly weekends in Dublin

Who let the dogs out and she bangs - a wicked hen weekend in new york pre twin towers. saddly that bride is now divorced.

Songs just seem to bring back instant memories. There are a whole stack of them from the late 60s (none of which I can think of off hand) that remind me of Shepton Mallet (bizarrely!). I used to spend a lot of time in Bath with my grandparents and presumably Shepton Mallet was somewhere they took me?!

Anything by the Jam or the Cars reminds me of our last year at school (5th year- would be Y11 now).

Come on Eileen was "our" song from when me & Dh were first together.

Holiday by Madonna, Life in a Northern Town & a couple of others from being really really sick carrying DD.

There are probably hundreds more.

Sweet child 'o'mine-Guns & Roses.Takes me back to the early 1990's when I was able to afford to go to California every autumn.

I only have to hear it & I'm back on Venice Beach..........

marthamoo · 23/09/2005 19:35

Rhubarb, what a great song - and lovely video. I just played it for my boys - they like it too. Is the band Nizlopi or Monkeehub? Do you know if the rest of the album is of a similar style - it's like a cross between Tracy Chapman and Billy Bragg. Oooh thanks for sharing that!

Mytwopenceworth · 23/09/2005 19:46

Communards, Don't leave me this way reminds me of one of the most embarassing times of my life - I was, what, about 12ish and had my first proper kiss at my aunt's bonfire party - and bear in mind I was VERY naive before I confess this - I cried to my auntie a few days later that I was scared I was pregnant!!!!!!!

I still cringe!

dropinthe · 23/09/2005 19:47

Penny Lover-Lionel Blair-one of my faves!

bakedpotato · 23/09/2005 19:56

Changes, David Bowie (first big crush. I was totally obsessed, he didn't even know my name)
Level 42, Something about You (second big crush. I was totally obsessed, etc etc)
Peg by Steely Dan: university, spliff, that feeling of excitement/confidence that life was about to take off.
Then it all goes a bit quiet until my new mum song (pregnancy song, actually) which is Kate Bush's Wow. I remember sitting in armchair listening to it and dripping tears terror, happiness all over the bump.
Lots of Kate on this thread!

dropinthe - soulgirls forever!!!

Went to a bar on Friday and they were playing our kind of music - it was really good but I find myself thinking "now that's proper music you can dance to". Am incredibly old!!

KBear · 23/09/2005 21:59

ooh, and

I've had the time of my life - Dirty Dancing

I have watched that 8.4 million times. Brings back memories of hungover Saturday mornings, wrapped in a duvet eating toast and marmite with the girls staying over.

Such worries in those days too, like ...

will he ring?
hope he doesn't ring
what shall I wear?
what if he doesn't ring?
where are we going tonight?

dropinthe · 23/09/2005 22:00

What Bar K bear?-when are we going??

KBear · 23/09/2005 22:38

Zero in bexleyheath - usually crap music but the gods were with me last Friday. How we danced! It was a like Zen and T's all rolled into one!!

shuffles off to make Ovaltine in flannelette nightie.....
