I am having this discussion elsewhere and amazed at some of the views. Just wanted to see what the general concesuss was on here.. without spouting my own views!

most people on low incomes can walk tho, so dont have to run a car and have to pay for parking.

Fio2 · 19/09/2005 21:46

sleepyjess, wasnt it sandra who was being an ignoramous last time?!

aloha · 19/09/2005 21:46

wierdos.
My beautiful, clever, fantastic friend has no legs after an accident. Blimey, she just loves having to go everywhere on a scooter and being just about able to get about on artificial limbs if she has her stick. What a treat that is. If the motability scheme is so lush, why don't we all cut our legs off to get onto it, eh?

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 21:47

What was 'last time' Fio? Sadly I waste far too much of my online time with 'those people'.. and battle with some of them quite regularly..!

It's not black and white though is it - some disabled people can afford the parking fees better than those on low incomes and not all those on low incomes can manage public transport for whatever reason. However, it's a case of the majority of disabled people benefit greatly from free parking and the majority of those "able bodied" on low incomes could use other modes of transport. It would be hideously tricky to try and sort out those for whom this does not apply. If that makes sense.

starshaker · 19/09/2005 21:48

im on a low income but dont have a choice but to have the car. we live in a very rural area with very little public transport. would take me 3 buses and 1.5 hours to get to the local shops

misdee · 19/09/2005 21:49

my dh wouldnt be able to get on a bus.

laughinglil · 19/09/2005 21:49

There isn't anywhere that says though that disabled people can't work though. Most places now days have to cater for disabilities so yes i think they should have to pay like everybody else. Down our road you have to pay to park because we live near a shopping centre and a main route into london. If you have a disabled badge they don't come near you . How unfair is that , that you get a ticket for parking outside your own home. I might ask somebody to borrow their disabled badge and get it free! Only kidding but they are all at it round here its disgusting!

SoupDragon · 19/09/2005 21:49

But you do, in fact, have a choice, it's just a crp one. Most disabled people don't even have that crp choice open to them. That's the point.

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 21:50

Move then starshaker?

OP posts:
Fio2 · 19/09/2005 21:50

we cant even afford to have the 'free' motobility car

expatinscotland · 19/09/2005 21:50

Exactly, aloha. And those of us who don't want to cut off our legs can become carers. Woohoo! Sleepless nights coping w/an ill person, worry, stress, loss in income b/c your life is a schedule of hospital appointments, rude people staring, the search for suitable housing, etc.

Yeah, disabled people get all the luck, eh?

Gimme a break! I can't believe this is even an issue.

Cowardlycustard, we're so skint we have next to nothing to eat on after paying for rent, council tax and power. We're the dig around for change in the couch types.

But you won't hear us grousing about benefits for disabled people. You outta be ashamed of yourself!

misdee · 19/09/2005 21:51

of course some diabled people can work. who says they cant? some cant tho.

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 21:51

Why the f* not Fio??! They are FREE for pity's sake woman!! Get down to the showroom now and help yourself! That are even converted to run on Fresh Air!!

Very true, misdee. My husband has serious learning disabilities and has been working since he was 16.

Thomcat · 19/09/2005 21:52

Have to laugh really. Would love to see you all saying that the majority of parking shouldn't be free if you were disabled or had a child that was. You'd all be gagging to pay wouldn't you! Oh I can't walk, I'm in pain, I'm forced to register myself disabled, but yeah please, please can I pay to park on the local high street, I mean I kn ow I have to drive because there is no other way, but please let me pay for that privilage, please! Wohhhooooo, what a great bonus, it's great to have a child that can't walk, I get 60p's worth of free parking when I stop off somewhere and carry lottie in to pick somthing up from the hight street or whatever it is. Hmmmm, get real, and what's it matter to you anyway if parking for people who have to have a blue badge is free? (not aimed at anyone other than those who think disabled people should pay to park).

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 21:53

starshaker · 19/09/2005 21:53

cant move dps work is here and he gets there with his dad. my situation isnt the point just that some people on low incomes need to have a car as does some disabled people.

monkeytrousers · 19/09/2005 21:53

Yes, along with the girls prepared to get pregenant to get a scummy flat all of their own on some sink estate, lets lob in the undeserving disabled who scam us all out of our taxes by expecting to have the same rights a privaledges as the rest of us. I mean who do they think they are??

Fio2 · 19/09/2005 21:53

haha sleepyjess

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 21:54

Hear hear TC!

OP posts:
Thomcat · 19/09/2005 21:54

BTW - mobility cars - they aren't free, they take the DLA you recieve, which some people rely on and need for other costs in their life.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2005 21:54

But starshaker, you could get the bus (or rather 3 of them) and many disabled people simply can't.
