Help help help. Did a really stupid thing, went on holiday leaving a few clothes in the washing basket to wash when we got back and the traces of food left on toddler's pinafore dress has turned to mould and impregnated the fabric so can't wash it out (also the tablecloth and t-shirt in there too) I've tried Ace bleach but to no avail, I think there are stain devils you can buy for mould but can't find them anywhere, so has anyone used them, do they work and where the bleep can I buy one?????!!!!

lizzer, i hate to depress you but if it's black mildew it will never come out...i know this from bitter experience!

I've found Ace is fairly useless (except on blood stains) - the only product I've used which has removed all stains on clothing is OxiClean, it's an American bleach powder and it's available from Lakeland Ltd www.lakeland.co.uk

You could try the dry cleaners. Someone once said Milton fluid to me but I presume that would do the same as Ace?

Tigermoth · 27/08/2001 21:28

Alternatively,, can you dye the affected items a darker colour to disguise the mould stains. I have done this in the past and it worked.

Well the offending items are still sitting in a bucket in the kitchen looking very sorry for themselves! Good idea for dying them, I might try that with the denim pinafore dress, but am now thinking is it worth the hassle as she'll be growing out of it soon - same goes for the dry cleaning, hmmmm... I'm thinking of grabbing some of this oxyclean, if it is as good as you say beelzebub, the lakeland shop isn't far away from me so may pop there soon....thanks people, I really hope they don't end up as cleaning rags!

lizzer, oxyclean is just another form of bleach - milton, ace etc are chlorine bleaches and oxy is oxygen bleach. the thing about mildew is that it kind of eats the fabric and removes the colour...rather like what bleach does except that it leaves you with a black mark instead of a white one.

dying a dark colour is your best bet really. set a new trend with a black tablecloth!

when i say dying...!

Goodness, Janh, I didn't know that about mildew!! You learn something new every day on Mumsnet!
