katymac · 18/09/2005 22:09

We would have an income of between £13k and £23K pa and a lump sum of about £30k

Where could we go?
Could we afford to buy?
DH is 53 and has a health problem - I am 37 and with intermittent health - DD is 7 so education is important

We don't speak any languages - but would learn

But have no idea where to go - don't have to make a quick decision, so any MN ideas?

We plan to go to NZ using the equity from our house here to drastically reduce mortgage outgoings so dh can have a less stressful life. Look at the thread about moving to Auckland for brilliant info if NZ grabs you!

katymac · 18/09/2005 22:12

Joolstoo - a bit worried about the air quality there as DH has asthma

NZ - possible......not language difficulties

We might not - but we are at a cusp in our lives and are dscussing all the possibilities.

We could expand the business or buy a bigger house or maybe emigrate

Just speculating I think

the air quality down here is none to rich either!

edam · 18/09/2005 22:18

I've always been tempted by Vancouver. Brilliant scenery, temperate climate and lovely people. A big enough city to have a thriving community of artists and all the shops and entertainment you could want but easy to get around in and much more relaxed than the UK. And less division between rich and poor than in the states - decent public services too.

Come to think of it, why am I stll here?

katymac · 18/09/2005 22:18

That might be part of the decision JT.....Norfolk is better than Liverpool or London.....but there must be somewhere better

you need to head for the hills

Wales, Devon, cornwall, Dorset, North Yorkshire, Cumbria????

katymac · 18/09/2005 22:21

I suppose Cornwall might appeal

I just kind of hanker for warmer weather - not hot you understand just warmer

Cyprus? My parents have moved out there and my father has asthma and bronchitus, and to my knowledge the conditions have improved loads.

shorty3 · 18/09/2005 22:22

Posts crossed - probably too hot in summer

katymac · 18/09/2005 22:23

I think I might enjoy too hot

France then - you can get some bargains in France and not overly hot.

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 22:26

New Zealand or Aussie

Both are beautiful and deffo brill

DaddyCool · 18/09/2005 22:26

canada - cheap but huge unemployment unless you commute into the big cities. very cold in the winter. vancouver is nice but has weather like the UK and is most expensive out of the entire country.

australia - cheapish but not in all areas. employment quite good. weather fantastic.

NZ - seems to be good all round but i don't have much info on it.

UK - pleasant but ridiculously expensive and houses are like rabbit hutches

Linnet · 18/09/2005 22:28

Dh and I would love to emigrate to Canada, but they run a points system and we don't qualify. USA, Australia and NZ also run a points system and we don't qualify for any of those either.

Lucky you to be able to have the opportunity.

Is there anywhere we could live on that little money?

Will I have to work?

Can I go away and vegitate?

I don't know what I want - the religous stuff in France worries me

DH is Jamaican - would that rule anywhere out?

OP posts:
katymac · 18/09/2005 22:29

How do the points thingie work?

OP posts:
paolosgirl · 18/09/2005 22:30

Australia without a doubt for the outdoor, easy-going lifestyle. We don't have enough points to get in though, sadly, as our professions aren't in demand over there.

soapbox · 18/09/2005 22:31

DH and I are going to stay in the UK for 6 months a year and going to travel for 6 months a year when we retire

Plan is to stay in a different country for each 6 months renting on a short term rent.

Want to do so many places it seemed hard to choose just one.

Our UK house will probably be in Cornwall, with a little pied a terre in London

canada. you could live in canada quite easy.

points can be complicated depending on country but is based on 'skills migration' and each profession has a certain amount of points as well as other factors such as age, current financial position and where you're willing to live.

oz has the most easy to understand points system. they're pretty clear cut.

if you're willing to live rurally in oz, you have a big chance of getting in.

canada's imigration requirements seem a bit intimidating initially but in the end, they let pretty much anyone in.

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 22:32

You could go to canada on the nanny scheme but not sure if you can live out?

I did it but lived in
