katymac · 18/09/2005 22:09

We would have an income of between £13k and £23K pa and a lump sum of about £30k

Where could we go?
Could we afford to buy?
DH is 53 and has a health problem - I am 37 and with intermittent health - DD is 7 so education is important

We don't speak any languages - but would learn

But have no idea where to go - don't have to make a quick decision, so any MN ideas?

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:11

expatinscotland · 18/09/2005 23:19

Bordeaux. Deffo.

TwinSetAndPearls · 18/09/2005 23:29

Is Toronto French speaking?

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:29

no english

but everywhere is bi lingual

bobbybob · 18/09/2005 23:38

katymac - NZ childminders are self employed and so you would have to be granted residency to work for yourself. That's were the points system comes in. You are given points for age, education etc.

The immigration website is good for information.

Look also at home based education websites for details on how childminding works. A lot of people get subsidies from the Govt and they can only be paid to approved providers - which means big chains like Barnardos, PORSE etc. and then you work under their banner in a self employed capacity.

On a work visa you would have to work for someone else.

TwinSetAndPearls · 18/09/2005 23:47

I don't know why but I thought it was french speaking! I know most if not all are bilingual but I thought that if I wanted to return to teaching I would need a good level of french if I was working in a french region of Canada.

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:49

One of the children I was nanny to had French Immersion classes

ie she had half of the lessons taught in french

like having maths or geog taught by speaking writing in french iyswim

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:50

But that was cos she was in the top group of the year iyswim

Linnet · 18/09/2005 23:51

Twinsetandpearls, I think to get in, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, you have to have some level of ability to speak, read, write French.

I know that on the websites I've looked at on immigration to Canada they all have a question in their form that asks about your level of competence in French and English and you are awarded points accordingly.

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:53

I know on the nanny entrance scheme you didn't french

BUT did need a medical

After 2 or 3 years you would be awarded dual nationality

RTKangaMummy · 18/09/2005 23:54

but that is a special scheme

TwinSetAndPearls · 19/09/2005 01:15

We have very basic french and as we have been told that the process is two years (if everything goes smoothly - which it hasn;t been thank to our dwindling financial status!) we thought that would be enough time to improve our French. But I assumed that to be teaching your french may have to be better than just to enter the country,

.. you need to know some french to get in?! that's ridiculous. canada is not bi lingual at all they just pretend to be.

i don't know a word of french except oui and je'mappele (sp?) daddycool and i lived in the toronto area until i was 21.

all the packages and signs are in english/french but is pisses everyone off. there is a definatite border between ontario and quebec and a whole bucket load of bad feeling.

DaddyCool · 19/09/2005 09:05

.... you see now this is what winds me up about canada and canadians....oooh , don't get me started.

i like the country. don't get me wrong. and we're considering going back to 'test the waters' but there are many things about canada that make my blood boil such as the rules and regs around immigration, foreign qualifications and the general view on the rest of the world.

i can't believe they want to you to know some french. that's crazy. the french section is very small and sparsely populated and the economy (other than montreal) is shot to sh*t so not many people would want to emigrate into that area anyway.

DaddyCool · 19/09/2005 09:13

and yes, some of them have terrible interior decor sense

(goose and duck borders, pink polyester sheets and lots and lots of 'country kitchen' small floral patterns.... )

DaddyCool · 19/09/2005 09:14

... is anyone about or am i just ranting to myself

... i'll get my coat...

DaddyCool · 19/09/2005 09:20

...which reminds me . I used to work for a decorator in canada and i painted an entire 2500 square foot home pink on their request. the entire thing, basement to loft in cotton candy pink. lightish pink on the walls and a darker pink on the woodwork. it was a big job and by the end of it i felt sick driving to the site in the morning. idiots.

katymac · 19/09/2005 09:29

That's OK Daddycool - you rant away into the ether...we don't mind

No firm decisions yet this morning

don't know if you mentioned this before or anything but have you considered just spain or one of the warm european countries. no applications needed, just move (i'm sure you have, sorry, silly question)

katymac · 19/09/2005 09:35

Definately a possibility..not sure which country tho'

I lot depends on the schooling & health care

We could just buy a second home and travel a bit more often

Another vote for NZ....

I'll be off there in a few years if all goes to plan. I'll either have to get a job there first though or marry DP (yikes, maybe stay here after all...) - my getting a job there would be easy, but I don't think the same applies to all jobs.

DaddyCool · 19/09/2005 09:54

oh, and while i think of it.. does anyone want to buy a three bed semi in rugby warks!? i can't go anywhere if i don't sell the thing. on the market for a week and NO viewings as of yet.
