Bumped into a school friend's husband on Friday who casually mentioned that he was thinking of having a barbecue on Sunday afternoon and would we be free, I said it sounded lovely and we'd love to come, he said he'd call.

Saw him yesterday at a kid's party - no mention

We assumed it wasn't happening .. he has just called now (at 4.55) to ask if we were coming? Am a little shocked TBH and feel I've made a social faux pas.

TBH if I'd known it was on I'd have called this morning to give our apologies because the whole household is coughing and spluttering.

I think not calling people until an hour or so before you have a barbecue is the social faux pas. You have the perfect excuse, anyway - all ill. Do you have to call him back and let him know?

Sounds like crossed wires to me - does he realise he promised to call and didn't? If I'd done something like that (ie not calling), I'd feel very embarrassed.

Nah - didn't sound like a firm invitation or final agreement on Friday so I'd have felt a bit funny turning up given that he said he'd call (presumably to confirm) and he didn't.

I always feel odd about these things though so i know what you mean.

Sounds like a typical bloke-arrangement to me - vague. Do you think he forgot he'd invited you and then his wife got him to call when she realised you weren't there?

I wouldn't feel bad, it's him that's made the faux-pas, if anyone has.

am still inwardly blushing

anyway I wouldn't have accepted if I'd known it was a late-start one because DD goes to bed at 6pm .. I thought it was more an afternoon affair

Just think of all those wasted sausages

I wouldn't feel bad, I'd feel forgotten. Anyway, too cold for a bbq today.
