We're thinking of programming the telly to block any station with advertising so DS isn't innundated with all the pre-xmas crap. He is too young to really understand it so far but it is already attracting his attention with the stings, etc. If we what to watch those channnels we'll have to access them. Does anyone else to this?

Not yet! But what does it involve? I take it you have to have cable/Sky...?

monkeytrousers · 18/09/2005 11:17

We have cable but not Sky. I'll let you know if it'spossible..

I bloody hate adverts! And not even because of dd. Although do now hate them more...

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 11:30

Doesn't that just leave BBC1 and BBC2

spidermama · 18/09/2005 11:32

I've hated adverts for a while now ever since my 3-year old ds ran into the kitchen saying, 'Mummy the man on TV said we've got to have a bowl of Coco Pops'.

It's worse when I see my daughter (who's 6)worrying that her hair isn't silky enough and lacking in Ceramide R.

I'm trying to teach them a healthy disrespect for adverts though.

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 11:35

We used to love playing advert games when we were little and passed it onto my children..

seeing who can guess the most adverts first in each break, so you sit barking at TV

coke, daz etc

My Dad hated commercial channels, I was brought up with a BBC1 has priority (followed by BBC2)if there was any argument about which programme to watch.

weesaidie · 18/09/2005 11:37

Oh my god Zippi! We used to do that!

Now I just mute it, or flick. Can't stand them. But wouldn't want just two channels either! But from what MT has said I think she and her dh could get access to all channels...?

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 11:48

Is that by watching on a time delay..and eliding the breaks..!!??

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 11:51

There's an interesting article in the Sunday Times about product placement and the |BBC

Sickening zippi.
That's why we don't allow our kids free access to the tv,just a video (yes, remember those?) at a time.
I honestly don't think that dd has seem more than about 5 hours of advets in her life (nearly 5)

I'm not being holier than thou.just pointing out that it is possible.
Went to see an acquaintance the other morning for a cup of tea and am still haunted by the memory of seeing her dh (bad leg) glued to the sofa and CBeebies for the entire time I was there.
She did a fair bit of blank eyed gawping too.

Their 2 year old didn't look at it once!

spidermama · 19/09/2005 12:58

I'm glad to note that so many of you also mute the telly when adverts come on. I do this but it really irritates my husband.
He thinks I'm mad. (Wild eyes) I'm not you know. Oh no. It's everybody else.

tamum · 19/09/2005 13:09

I actualy let them watch adverts now they're older and use it as an opportunity to lecture them about the evils of advertising (mwah hah hah). It actually works incredibly well, they are almost as cynical as me now. They also mute the adverts of their own volition

Caligula · 19/09/2005 13:16

I just don't let my kids watch anything except Cbeebies. No ads.

Except the x factor on Saturday nights - they love that! But the ads generally aren't targeted at their age group then. And I always give a commentary.

RachD · 19/09/2005 13:29

God, I love adverts.
I used to love them more than programmes.

But I think that monkeytrousers idea about blocking christmas ones is brill.

I can't stand the fact that ads for Xmas start in Sept.

Ds 19 mths has no interest in tv at all.
Only likes football matches .....
don't know why - big green screen with lots of little movement ? Wierd.
Pleases dh, no end.
