I've got some nice new white towels which someone put in the washing machine with RED pillow cases. (need a job doing properly ...and all that ). That dylon colour run stuff hasn't done the job - can I / should I bleach them?

(also - do you think we should have a "domestic" section??! What would it get called and wouldn't someone get offended...?

Are they 100% cotton, if so I would bleach them but only in a very dilute solution. Or you try bleach in the machine. Nothing to lose!

Davros · 10/09/2005 19:45

bleach, colour run remover is rubbish.

tillykins · 10/09/2005 19:47

Bleach - and lots of it
should get your washing machine all clean too!

A domestic section? Yes, you could call it "Don't let your husband wash your new raw silk white blouse with all the other whites"
Not that I'm bitter...

foxinsocks · 10/09/2005 19:48

tillykins!

yes, would do mild bleach and then if any sun, chuck them outside on the line for a bit (always seems to do the trick)

crazydazy · 10/09/2005 19:50

At least yours knows how to turn the washer on!!!!

serah · 10/09/2005 20:20

you can also get a product by Dylon called Dygon - for this very purpose!

Janh · 10/09/2005 20:36

It will wash out gradually - I washed some assorted coloured towels with a dark green sheet recently and they all came out with a v greenish tinge, but it is going slowly, so don't worry too much, hatstand.

Wash them a lot at 90 degrees or whatever the label says.

Skribble · 10/09/2005 23:52

If it doesn't come out you could dye them a darker colour, our white towels have strange rust marks on them but they are brown so not pleasant looking so I am considering dying them.

NannyL · 11/09/2005 00:05

I would bleech them as well (worth a try)...

also be sure to wash using a powder for WHITES (ie not a 'colour' product or a non bio liquid, in order to have the bleeching agents in the detergent, and line dry to get the good old fashioned sun bleaching them as well!

hornbag · 11/09/2005 11:27

Dying them sounds like a good option. Get a machine dye from Dylon -I've used them to dye all sorts ( including muslins which were a little stained and discoloured after DD -dyed them blue for DS and have had loads of comments of "ooh where did you get those...")

hatstand · 11/09/2005 21:00

blimey - still going ay...what are those funny rust like spots you sometimes get on towels? have to say I'm not entirely sure who to blame - dh left a random / unsorted pile of washing on the kitchen floor, nanny put it in the washing machine. They have contrived between them to make it look like an accident with no perpetrator. grrrr. The silver lining is that having white towels has been driving me bonkers - they look dirty within a day. So have been hankering after some pale grey ones. perhaps I can justify it now...or maybe I should throw the dirty pink ones in the machine with dh's black socks...

I am attempting to see a similar lining in the fact a cheap dip-dyed Indian skirt has dyed a pair of cotton trousers that really do need a proper change of colour (suspect rust-coloured patches look horribly as if I've pooed in them, frankly, and now I have to do a proper machine-dye job) and a T-shirt which though charming was only a fiver from Primark.

Pah.

Scrubbers unite

hatstand · 11/09/2005 21:23

hmmm. I'm pretending to be a domestic drudge wondering round the house, bleaching towels, sorting washing out, tapping away on mn, while dh entertains his cousin. Have run out of things to do. Best go and be sociable.
