Global Conflict - gosh that's a hard one - Twin Towers

People Power and Politics - Mandela

Human Tradgedy - Ethiopian Famine

World Firsts - Heart Transplant

Sport - Johnny Wilkison

Angelizickle · 09/09/2005 13:48

I think the Global Conflic one was the hardest one to choose in.

stitch · 09/09/2005 13:49

just done a google and found this

"The Day That Shook The World [VHS] (1977)
Powerful historical drama examining the events that led to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, which led to WWI."

So yes I guess it could be

Lonelymum · 09/09/2005 13:54

Trouble with this survey is that people are bound to pick the recent things as there are more people who remember them. I was just looking at the Aberfan disaster and thinking that was worse in some respects than something like Dunblane and yet I have been far more haunted by Dunblane than by Aberfan.

Angelizickle · 09/09/2005 13:54

Before i'd seen the shots i thought Ethiopia, twin towers and Berlin Wall.

OP posts:
tiredemma · 09/09/2005 13:54
  1. twin towers
  1. berlin wall

  2. tsunami

  3. man on the moon- (was this real though? have a friend at college who fills me with conspiracy theories about it.

  4. jonny, although the liverpool game was the most exciting footbal match i have ever watched.

QueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2005 13:55

I don't think so - look at some of the surveys of 'best movies' etc - lots of "old" ones make it into the lists. And certainly some of the ones I selected weren't the most recent.

sweetheart · 09/09/2005 13:56

I think Beslan gets my vote over Twin Towers - purly because of the poor kiddies involved. That picture of the girls face just makes me want to cry.

QueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2005 13:56

YAY - another Jonny Fan

That shot was awesome and I could watch it over and over again. I was 39 weeks pg and I was bouncing around the room afterwards (waters broke the following day LOL).

tiredemma · 09/09/2005 13:59

Lonelymum · 09/09/2005 14:05

sassy · 10/09/2005 08:22

Global conflict - WW1 (cos WW2 a direct result of way WW1 was handled, never mind horrendous loss of life in WW1 itself).

People, power and politics

Human tragedy - Martin Luther King, Ghandi

World firsts - agree QoQ, heart transplant

Sport - the incredible black swimmer whose hand Hitler refused to shake at 1936 olympics

happymerryberries · 10/09/2005 08:52

I remember Aberfan happening. My father went to help to dig our the ruins, almost all of the local men did. It was awful. I had just started in nursery school and the children killed were in the school that got hit by the waste tip. All of the adlts kept saying ' It could have heppened to her' meaning me, as our school was right by a waste tip. It scared me so much I had nightmares and would hide under the stairs....someone mentioned this was the safest place to be in the house.

It was horrific. Not on the scale of the others , obviously, but a very personal link to this one for me.

happymerryberries · 10/09/2005 08:54
