Mobile Phone Masts

A local company has agreed for three 12 foot mobile phone masts to be put on the roof of a building which overlooks the estate where we live. There are 500 houses on the estate and the local junior and infant school is close by. Naturally I am horrified. Visually it is going to look like a scene from War of the Worlds, as if the office block isn't bad enough and I am worried about the adverse effects on my children's health. I understand these things can be very difficult to stop. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is there anything that suggests that mobile phone masts are a danger? By the way, I don't use a mobile myself!

I think they have to get planning permission - so contact your local councillor and try to get them on your side. They can help you to fight it - and get your neighbours involved. Write expressing your concerns to the company who have allowed their building to be used.

We have just successfully battled against getting a mobile mast near us. Apparently these things are "pre-agreed" and they will only reconsider if there is significant opposition from local residents. The opposition can be on the grounds of potential danger to health (especially children's), also the local environment (i.e. will there be an adverse impact on the surroundings), other health and safety issues etc.

They do need to get planning permission and there is usually a deadline by which any letters must be in, so you need to act fast. I would contact the local council and find out - then send a letter opposing it and try and get as many people around you to do the same. A petition may also help.

Redka - just wanted to say how nice to hear of another non mobile phone user! I started a thread on this ages ago and I really thought I was the only mumsnetter who didn't have one!
