Kandoo wipes warning!

IlanaK · 01/09/2005 13:02

I spent a lovely afternoon yesterday with the plumbers from Dyno Rod watching them pull out kandoo wipes from my toilet system using tweezers! We had a drainage problem and ended up having to call them in. They plumber told me that his business had never been so good since kandoo wipes were invented. Apparantly they take 5 weeks to break down and only the newest plumbing systems can cope with the "abuse" (his term). He also warned me about the parazone toilet wipes (we use these sometimes) and quilted toilet paper. And he said he was waiting with bated breathe since he saw those new adds for those things to wipe your toilet with that you then release the brush thing and flush away.

We now have put a ban on kandoo wipes going down the loo and will put a bin (with lockable lid) in the bathroom for their disposal instead.

And I will say, my son does not have unsupervised toilet time so this is not a result of him thorwing too many wipes down the toilet - we are the ones who do the wiping.

Anyway, I hope this saves someone else the lovely afternoon I had yesterday.

My mom warned me about that ages ago when a friends loo was blocked and a load of Kandoo wipes were fished out. The bloke said non of the flushable ones are actually flushable.

Hmmmm have used a few though whilst potty training Ds, will have to be stricter and use loo roll.

does no=one buy nappy bags to dispose of arsewipes and tampons?

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 01/09/2005 18:06

Blimey - we get through loads of kandoo and those parazone flushable toilet wipes in this house ... worried now... would never flush normal baby wipes though, only the ones that profess to be flushable

we just wipe ds' bum with loo paper. we have victorian plumbing & i'm not risking it.

kath4kids · 01/09/2005 20:00

On the subject of coloured loo roll i sat in a lecture about green issues and we were told that white loo roll degrades quicker than the coloured. Something to do with the fact that there's less chemicals and colurings etc.

Don't know if its true but i always buy white just in case, but in saying that we have used one packet of kandoo wipes, the odd wet wipe has gone down the loo as have nappy liners

Gobbledigook · 01/09/2005 20:03

IlanaK - we had the same thing with our drains and had dyno-rod out twice. I had a right row with British Gas who do our plumbing cover because after the 1st visit the dyno-rod bloke said not to put anything non-flushable 'like baby wipes' down the toilet or we wouldn't be covered next time. THe next time he came and there were kandoo wipes in he said he'd told me not to put them down. Er, no, kandoo wipes are flushable, baby wipes are not - difference.

Anyway - we won in the end

But no longer put them down the loo. The obviously do block drains. Our house is very old so drains clearly not new enough to deal with the 'abuse'

jampots you can get special little bags (Pop-ins, I think) for tampons/ pads, which are tastefully coloured purple, apparently to mask the colour! Never bought a nappy sack in my life (washables for me) so don't know how they compare in price.

What's the point of nappy sacks? More plastic, more crap.
Kath4kids,don't you have biodegradable nappy liners? Dead easy, just lift them out with most of the poo on them and flush.

I am glad someone else brought up the nappy liner issue. Since this happened, we have put a complete ban on the kandoo wipes and parazone wipes. However, we do use nappy liners and don't know what to do about them. We use a mixture of cloth and disposables, but use the flushable liners in both. I personally think that throwing poo in the bin is disgusting and always tip it in the loo. If the poo is solid, then it will tip off the nappy or liner, but if not, the whole liner goes in the loo. I really can't stand the idea of putting it in the bin. So, do you think these breakdown better than kandoo wipes? I don't wnat another blockage!

I get Bambino Mio ones which are thin and papery, although I once accidentally bought some Boots ones and after a bit realised they were not to be flushe away. The instructions directed you to put the liner and the waste in the bin, thereby completely defeating the object of using reusable nappies.

Ilike the idea of reusable liners, but wouldn't fleece be a bit sweaty on the arse?

IlanaK · 01/09/2005 21:07

I have lots of fleece ones left from ds1. We alsways used them with him. But ds2 is much "runnier" so not always practical. Also, I don't fancy using the fleece with the disposables. I may just have to risk it!

QofQ, that's one more sheet than my dirty lads use if they're not harassed!. They lock the door too, so we stand out there chanting 'wipe your bum flush the loo', glad we have thick walls!!

Blackduck · 01/09/2005 21:24

Haven't read all this thread...but got the general idea...but have just fished half a loo roll (unused) out of our loo (good thing he didn't try to flush...!)

misdee · 01/09/2005 21:24

hmmmm have just watched the easte programme on bbc2, and they wqent to the water treatment palnt, and it showed all the wipes etc in the water treatment plant, andd of this ends in landfill. think i'll be sticking with sainsbury cheap bog rolls from now on.

Blackduck · 01/09/2005 21:25

Don't know why they specified the colour - but do know I am allergic to the dye - white in this house only...!

pootlepod · 01/09/2005 21:27

I use cleaning wipes for the loo and think I will stop using them now
