thinking of going on short break with friends... and instead of two cars... thought might be poss to hire a mpv for all of us (4 adults and 2 toddlers)

what do you think the cost would be (5 day hire)?
what mpv would you go for?
which hire company would you use?
what should i look out for?

or am i being foolish and it would cost way too much and just bundle everyone in their own cars???

ta!

bea - who's got the holiday feeling and feels like taking off everywhere!!!

  • sod the cost!!!

Sounds like a good idea. We hired a VW Sharan for a day trip when friends visited. Thought it would be more fun to be able to natter along the way. However the luggage capacity full of people (7 - 4 adults and 3 kids) was nowhere near the combined of 2 normal cars so you'd need to travel light. We just about got a sled and pushchair behind the 3 row of seats, and couple of small rucksacks in between. Would have been easier with 6 but you'd have to work out the right seat positions to maximise space.

Somehow friends' Galaxy seemed more practical(travelled 6 + large dog easily) but as this was a few years ago can't really remember why. Is there a slightly longer version perhaps?

just remember to ask early - in peak holiday season the MPVs are snapped up very quickly. I don't know how much they cost as we couldn't get one last year at short notice - had to hire a minibus instead (£500 ish for a week I think)

eeek! £500!!! that's double the cost of the break!!!!

how cheaply do you think it would be to hire one!

Hi, I work for a rental firm and we do carry the Vauxhall Zafira on fleet. Im not to sure of what the cost is as I dont work in the branch I work for a corporate customer. Please contact you Local National/ Alamo Car rental for a quote Im sure they will be able to help

or even try our website www.nationalcar.co.uk you'll be able to get a quote from that the Zafira is a U group

Interesting - the car in the photo on the homepage is (I'm pretty sure) a Zafira but it's not mentioned in the list.

In any case it's not really big enough for 6 plus luggage, unless you crammed one toddler between 2 adults and folded one of the back seats down. They do a Galaxy but you have to ask for a quote, they don't list prices.

bea, if you google "MPV hire" a lot of sites come up but they all seem to be local - if you put your own area in as well you might find something. (I put Lancs in and a place at Manchester Airport has a Fiat Ulysse 7-seater at £265 per week!) (+ VAT) (+ £15 for child seat hire but you'd have your own, wouldn't you?)

bea · 31/07/2003 20:27

ye gads,... i've had a few quotes here and there and surfed a few sites... and basically i'm looking at around £300... si i think we'll knock that on the head... goodness me i thikn we were being a bit naive to think we could hire one for minimal £150!

thanks for all the advice folks!!!

Never mind - you can always swap passengers (mums in one car, dads and toddlers in the other? )

bea · 01/08/2003 08:26

ha! ha! hadn't thought about that one... !!

raw deal for dh as it would be me, friend and her dp (two mums) in one car and dh and two todds in the other!!! ha! ha!
