there is always a line of cars waiting patiently to get nto the sussex hospital you wait with your engine turned off for ten minutes til a car comes out then the ticket machine will release a ticket and let you in. i had left a space and kept to my left as cars that got pissed off with waiting could drive passed turn round and go out to find somewhere else.

a car came speeding down passed all other cars went straight in front of me ( i was second in line ..had left a space..) i bibbed my horn and gesticulated with my thumb backwards whilst mouthing "theres a queue" to which he stuck two fingers up at me. then he opened his window and started screaming so loudly and violently that his whole body went red. his upper half of his body was out of the window whilst madly he was telling me he was waiting.
" we have all been waiting"
" you fcking sill stupid bitch you fkcing........"

the builders overhead told him to shuut up and were calling him names. then another man came over - he was in a yelloe reflector jacket - i thought he was from the car park. i told him to phone the police - i was scared. i told him what has happened and he walked off - yes walked off muttering something about getting the car park people.

then the fella got his ticket looked back at me told me to fk off and screamed loudly " har har" like a fucking pirate. i took his registration number. waited for my ticket and got in not long after.

he had waited for me in his car, he had done a full circuit of the grounf floor them came speeding up behind me, revving his engine then speeding up and speed breaking like he was going to ram my car. so i stopped my car. i wasn't entering into a starsky and hutch type chase in the car park.

he then hurled more abuse at me " you fucking ugly fat fucking bitch you fucking cunt...." you get the picture. luckily i found a space straight away on the loweer level. walked briskly to the door, which seemed ages away. its a good 10 minute walk to audiology - and i got lost becuase there is building works and for all that time i was terrified he would be there as the lift doors opened or on the stairwell.

i finally got to audiology and said to a member of staff " excuse me can you call security or the police, i have just been scared by a man in the car park.

a nurse came out and said " its not our problem luv"

so i started to cry - not sob but i was a bit upset. my daughter had got out of the car whilst we were waiting and went down to audiology - i was relived she wasn't in the car but i couldnt go anywhere else int eh hospital becuase she was waiting to get her hearing aids fixed.

eventually they sat me in a room, i reported it to security and the police, security came and escorted me back to the car.

when i got back home ( a 45 min drive) i just burst into tears. and my husband said " theres bound to be a copper on mumsnet...get his fking address am going to knock his block off"

was glad to come home to dh and glad emma wasn't in the car when it happened.

Custardo, having been on the receiving end of this kind of abuse, I do sympathise, I hope you're ok, it really shakes you up doesn't it?

Very similar thing happened to my Mum - her car door was kicked in (panel all dented) by a bloke who had wobbled and fallen off his bike as she overtook him (and if you had ever seen my Mum drive you would know it was nothing to do with driving recklessly or overtaking badly - she's the most careful, cautious driver I know). She stopped the car to see if he was OK and he ran at the car, screaming abuse, and kicked her door in. Thank God she hadn't got out - she'd started to open her door then shut it smartish when he started yelling. Luckily she had my brother with her who at the time was a baby faced, but 6 foot tall 16 year old - so when he got out of the car the bloke grabbed his bike and ran off.

You must have been really shaken up, custy - I think you were very brave to find a parking space and get out of the car at all. Just doesn't seem right that he gets away with it because he has mental health problems but I know that's the case. They'll do something when/if he actually hurts someone - which of course is far too late
