i know i know i am a fool... but this is kind of bugging me...

i know that formula milk is not allowed to be promoted. and i am fine with that.
and i know they are not allowed to sell it at reduced prices... again, ok with that.

BUT... why can i not use my boots points to pay for my formula?
I am going to buy it anyway. and it's so infuriating when i have tons of points but can' use them to get just one free tin of the stuff.
I realise i am talking from the pov of someone who already uses it, rather than someone expecting a baby whihc perhaps makes a difference...

but, would people really choose formula over breastefeding just because they could use their boots points? surely those kind of people would not bother much with breastfeeding anyway? or is that too much of an assumption?

it just seems unfair that having had to give up breastfeeding... as many of you know not through lack of trying!
that i can't even get ANY perks such as a free tin now and then...

i dunno,.. it kind of bugs me

MY DP agree's they're "scumbags" for targeting this site.

JoolsToo · 24/08/2005 22:07

oh well, it must be true then

Hazellnut · 24/08/2005 22:54

Without stirring this thread even more....... What is MOST annoying about the advantage points/discounts etc is that I think I am right in saying that you get discounts and/or points with follow on formulas and many people stick with stage one formulas even though you could go to follow on after 6 months. I know it would obviously be ridiculous to prove your baby was over 6 month but it IS still annoying.... But then I have no problem with formula advertising/discounting

nooka · 24/08/2005 22:58

I think that clinics do currently redeem vouchers for formula. I know that most of the assult cases my PCT has relate to baby milk. We recently had a receptionist in casualty due to being hit over the head with a tin. I think that this arrangement is about to change to pharmacists.

monkeytrousers · 25/08/2005 08:29

Glad you agree Jools

If you are on CTC you can get it free from our local HC.

So what's the difference when I got formula free on prescription for DD to them not being able to do promotions on it?

Or even those little free samples you get in the bounty packs?

& yes, mum2sumone, I AM fed up of being accused of being lazy etc etc because I HAD to bottlefeed DD. But at the end of the day, I know why I had to do it & I did it for the best for my DD, not because I couldn't be bothered. At 10pm, 1am, 4am, 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm (you get the idea)how much easier & less tiresome it would have been to just pop her on a boob, instead of making up formula, warming it, burping her etc etc! I challange ANYONE to accuse me of being lazy!

I made the choice to bottlefeed with her best interests at heart, otherwise she WOULD have wasted away!

starlover · 25/08/2005 12:53

argh i can't even be bothered to read the whole thread!

i DID NOT start this as a "should formula be promoted" thread... and it has NOTHING to do with the whole milupa ad.

i was just interested in people's thoughts on the fact that if i am buying formula anyway, why i can't get it with my boots points!

oh and by the way harpsichordcarrier for a lot of women (me included) formula feeding was not a CHOICE

i did everything i could to breastfeed, and was devatsted when it didn't work out.

so please don't tell me i am making a life choice and that it isn't fair on my baby.

I think that's the biggest myth about BF, that it is a choice. I wish it was as easy as just deciding to do it or not....I tried so hard to BF.

Anyhow, back to the point my DH managed to get formula at boots using a voucher by telling the cashier dd was over 6 months (which she wasn't...oops). Haven't tried with vantage points yet.

stitch · 25/08/2005 13:06

use your points for nappies. or wipes, or makeup or shampoo. whats the problem??????

starlover · 25/08/2005 13:08

it isn't a problem.
i use cloth nappies and wipes etc

i just don't see why i can't use my points to get formula. i'm going to buy the stuff anyway so what's the problem?

Do you know, I was totally unaware about the whole non-promotion of formula. It's not as though formula's a big secret is it!

As for not using points, I think it's silly. You get points when you purchase it don't you? So why not the other way round?

lunavix · 25/08/2005 13:15

starlover, I know exactly what you mean.

I REALLY wanted to breastfeed ds, sadly he didn't feel the same lol and after 2 months of struggling we switched to formula. I was devestated. I was sure he'd get fat, we wouldn't bond...

We had NO money with me being on maternity leave, and tbh the extra £7 a week (or more) we had to spend on formula would have made a difference, we'd banked on me breastfeeding.

I have no idea why formula can't be reduced or promoted, if people want to bottlefeed they will. And I see even less point in it being up to 6 months - they say you're meant to give formula (or breast feed) up until a year - but you can spend boots points on step up formula!

Plus I did see formula on special in tescos (2.99! cos of the cow and gate repackaging!) but a few selfrighteous types on here went up in arms about that.

At the end of the day, with such a hoo haa about it, they should make it prescription only if there has to be such a fuss made. Formula isn't bad for you, yet you can't promote it. Cigarettes are, and you can. You can die from smoking but can you die from formula? Err... no.

starlover · 25/08/2005 13:15

nbg no, you can't get points on formula either. which in a way i kind of agree with in so much as people can't think to themselves... ooh i'll use formula i'll end up with tons of points!

Dunno about Boots, but a lot of hospitals etc are going for BFI (baby friendly initiative, Unicef) Baby Friendly Status. I have the file from my breast feeding training and can check if you wish, but I THINK the no publicity is a criteria they have to meet

wordsmith · 25/08/2005 14:27

I don't think it's just formula - there are quite a few things you can't use your points for, such as medicines.

JoolsToo · 25/08/2005 14:28

that's correct

starlover · 25/08/2005 14:35

that's true actually. and stamps

But apart from that... what did the Romans do for us?
