i know i know i am a fool... but this is kind of bugging me...

i know that formula milk is not allowed to be promoted. and i am fine with that.
and i know they are not allowed to sell it at reduced prices... again, ok with that.

BUT... why can i not use my boots points to pay for my formula?
I am going to buy it anyway. and it's so infuriating when i have tons of points but can' use them to get just one free tin of the stuff.
I realise i am talking from the pov of someone who already uses it, rather than someone expecting a baby whihc perhaps makes a difference...

but, would people really choose formula over breastefeding just because they could use their boots points? surely those kind of people would not bother much with breastfeeding anyway? or is that too much of an assumption?

it just seems unfair that having had to give up breastfeeding... as many of you know not through lack of trying!
that i can't even get ANY perks such as a free tin now and then...

i dunno,.. it kind of bugs me

Yes, Mts, you do.

And when you buy a house you want info too.

Who do you (most) trust to do the survey,
A)the current owners
b)their estate agents
b)a urveyor employed by you to give a warts and all account?

starlover · 24/08/2005 18:05

i do agree with the not advertising bit. and to a certain extent the no promotion.

but i still want free milk! lol

as i said cut short..Tired of this debate really. I dont really see what its all about!!
I asked before if this is not the closest thing to breastmilk what is?

Also those of you who did try to breast feed and had to give up are you not annoyed with people on here saying it is a lack of help/determination!!!
I know i would be!!!

caligula · 24/08/2005 18:07

Well it's closer to breastmilk than gin is.

I agree you don't need info - they're all pretty much the same and it does come down to which one your baby can tolerate best.

The only difference would be the ones which are designed "for hungrier babies" - that can be a bit confusing. I remember my HV telling me not to use that because it's a useful one to use the baby is getting much hungrier, but is too young to be put onto solids.

desperatehousewife · 24/08/2005 18:08

too right m2someone....i was furious that I should be considered a lesser mother for choosing bottle!

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 18:08

can you still get free formula then or not?

yup, with you there hmo2

caligula · 24/08/2005 18:09

No I'm not annoyed. Because in my case (with my DD) it was a lack of help. I would be annoyed with someone saying it was a lack of determination though, because you don't know how determined someone is. And I wouldn't condemn someone for not being determined. Why should they be?

I am begining to theink the whole thing is a wind up..are people really this annoyed about a link?

caligula · 24/08/2005 18:10

Who considers you a lesser mother dh?

QueenOfQuotes · 24/08/2005 18:10

I disagree you DO need info.

When I decided to swtich to bottle with DS2 I had absolutely NO idea AT ALL what I needed, which milk to buy, how often I should feed him, how much, how to make the milk up - I had to rely on the information on the back of the tin of milk DH bought from Tesco at 1am in the morning

When I asked my HV for help/advice - she wasn't really anymore helpful - "oh the instructions are on the back fo the tin"....

caligula · 24/08/2005 18:12

But aren't the instructions good enough? Take x level measures and add to x fl oz... what else d'you need? (Sorry, I'm not being flippant, I genuinely don't know what other info is necessary?)

desperatehousewife · 24/08/2005 18:13

oh there are lots of people who bang on and on about breast feeding being the best and in some cases the only option for feeding a baby. A lot of people on MN are quite passionate about it and I just can't get my head round it. Of course breast is fantastic if you can and want to do it....healthy, free, easy (for some) etc etc. But there is another option and one that I personally think is as credible. I'm banging on now

babyonboard · 24/08/2005 18:14

my friedn just said you don't get netar points for formula1
mad as you do on alcohol..they even have offers of '500 free with x amount of bottles of wine' etc
surely if it falls under same rules, then this is encouraging people to drink by 'rewarding' them for doing so..teeheee

caligula · 24/08/2005 18:22

bob - you might be right. I wouldn't mention it, in case they start taking the points away.

astonished · 24/08/2005 18:23

How many times are people going to miss the point??

This is not a breast v bottle debate, I challenge you to find anyone who has had a go at bottle feeders.
It is about the cynical methods employed by Milupa to advertiase its products, by appelaing to BREASTFEEDERS not BOTTLEFEEDERS.

So all you bottlefeeders who are moaning about lack of info due to formulas not being able to advertise, they are not going to advertise to you are they??? You already use their products, they already make money from you guys, its the breastfeeding market they want to collar, particularly those who find breastfeeding difficult especially in the first few months. Which is another reason milk is only allowed to be advertised from six months, by then many have either established breastfeeding or are bottle feeding by this stage and are unlikely to be as influenced by advertising.

One more thing for all those who don't think its a problem advertising formula, Milupa have used underhand tactics WITHIN the law, can you imagine what they would do if it was legal???

There is no need to advertise formula, if you want it you can getit, there is all the info you need on the back of a tin, any health concerns re feeding your doctor or hv can deal with, I know because I too bottle fed.

randymama · 24/08/2005 18:27

so there is no need to advertise tea cos if you want it you can get it!!

astonished · 24/08/2005 18:29

Yes but how many people haven't bought formula milk because it isn't advertised and hasn't been for years?? People do still use it, it just prevents people from being unduly influenced at a difficult time

astonished · 24/08/2005 18:30

Sorry missed that one Pruni, but even so its not the crux of the debate going on is it?
