i know i know i am a fool... but this is kind of bugging me...

i know that formula milk is not allowed to be promoted. and i am fine with that.
and i know they are not allowed to sell it at reduced prices... again, ok with that.

BUT... why can i not use my boots points to pay for my formula?
I am going to buy it anyway. and it's so infuriating when i have tons of points but can' use them to get just one free tin of the stuff.
I realise i am talking from the pov of someone who already uses it, rather than someone expecting a baby whihc perhaps makes a difference...

but, would people really choose formula over breastefeding just because they could use their boots points? surely those kind of people would not bother much with breastfeeding anyway? or is that too much of an assumption?

it just seems unfair that having had to give up breastfeeding... as many of you know not through lack of trying!
that i can't even get ANY perks such as a free tin now and then...

i dunno,.. it kind of bugs me

Ooh that's a challenge. There was a thread about 3 months ago where some madwoman more or less said all bottlefeeders were feeding their babies poison. Can't remember exactly what she said, but it did cause a kerfuffle! That's the most offensive one I've ever seen, the latest spats have been tame in comparison.

desperatehousewife · 24/08/2005 18:45

OMG! !

astonished · 24/08/2005 18:46

Wasn't there one ages ago when someone said it takes a real mother to breastfeed, anyone can put a teat in a baby's mouth? Or something equally uncalled for?

Just want to make a point about people on income support getting free formula.

I was sent loads of milk tokens I never used because it is so difficult to find ANYWHERE that will take them! Supermarkets take them for fresh milk but not formula and most chemists won't accept them.

When I finished breast feeding (at about 10 months) I tried and failed numerous times. I even phoned the helpline no. on the back, got made to phone loads of different numbers and someone eventually told me she thought a certain chemist accepted them. Funnily enough they didn't!

steffee · 24/08/2005 19:34

Don't you get free tins of formula with CTC now?

monkeytrousers · 24/08/2005 19:48

Poor women are more likely to bottlefeed. The formula companies are trying to target the middle class demographic, hence...Munmsnet with a breastfeeding helpline. Genius!

astonished · 24/08/2005 19:50

Now Monkeytrosers thats a whole other arguement, and another which will go down in mumsnet history, something to do with teenagers never breastfeeding....

monkeytrousers · 24/08/2005 20:01

Oop's sorry! Someone asked below.

astonished · 24/08/2005 20:05

Don't apologise, it did cause a rucus thought!!

monkeytrousers · 24/08/2005 20:10

Oh, past my bedtime anyway!

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2005 20:23

Pruni, actually I didn't have a go at bottlefeeders. If it was the post I made this morning, it was in reference to a particular comment that ff was a personal choice - I said that I didn't agree that it was in fact a "personal choice", you were choosing on behalf of another person, who didn't in fact have a choice (or a voice). And that gave you a greater responsibility, than if you were making a choice about your own life.
I am sorry if anyone thought this was clumsy or offensive, though as a matter of fact I do know a bit about it, one way or another. But anyway it was just my opinion and not a judgment on anyone at all. I just think it is a bit of a cop out to say that to mention the negative impact of ff is taboo in case it makes some women feel guilty or unsupported. I would never judge anyone's particular situation. I do think it is important to have an honest and frank consideration of all the issues before reaching a decision. I have said before - this discussion is really NOT about any individual decision to ff, and anyone who thinks it is, as I have said before, is in my view being just a little self involved.
And I definitely never even mentioned bottles...
