My MIL has given me a Burberry golfing umbrella, in the Burberry check.

It's quite nice, but very Burberry. Whaddyareckon style gurus?

I agree it's not like MIL's given me a baseball cap.

Snafu - do you still use your Burberry brolly?

And Babyonboard, am v intrigued. Tell me more - what kind of things were Burberry asking? Was it about all their products or just some?

It was fairly general, but a lot was aimed towards the 'burberry check' i.e questions such as, what were your opinions of it 5 years ago, and how has it changed
Did we prefer newer styles without the checks, which words we would associate with each style etc. Was quite fun.. and i got free burberry perfume for my trouble!

ds has on a burberry jumper today but its just plain navy with a bit of burberry on the crease of the arm. It looks lovely. Burberry is very chav if there is too much. It is nice if plain and simple

I think a Burberry umbrella,as long as worn with no other labels,a classy outfit and a sense of style is fine!

SoupDragon · 24/08/2005 15:37

Has become naff through negative associations but I would never have called it nice.

Tinker · 24/08/2005 18:35

naff and was never nice. an ugly design is always an ugly design

I do use it now and then, MrsCurly (mainly when it is raining). But I try to make sure my face is covered so no-one can see it's me and set the dogs on me

I have the most beautiful wool/silk/cashmere overcoat from burbery. No check in sight, it is wonderful and one of the classiest things in my wardrobe. Cost a reasonable sum but has lasted years. I got it from the afctory shop when my dad was working there

burberry check should stick to the lining where it can only be seen in flashes imo.

babyonboard · 24/08/2005 19:05

It is just the check that can be offensive..mainly due to it becoming a badge of recognition (like fred perry) for football hooligans, and then the explosion of high street copies, which meant it was seen everywehere
Especially daniella westbrook..does anyone remember the pics of her with baby, both dressed head to toe in it, with matching burberry buggy?

I still think you can get away with it, depending on your overall style anyway. i.e addidas bottoms, crop top and burberry cap is not good, but someone dressed stylishly with an umbrella, coat, whatever would be fine.
My god ,I hate to be so judgemental but these associations seem to be deeply ingrained in the public psyche.
And i must admit i have a burberry check dress which fits me perfectly, but i have dyed it black as a result of the negative associations...
