Imagine my delight when I lugged both boys up to the post office to find out that it's shut on Wednesday afternoons. Are we in the 21st century or have we slipped back to the 18th without me noticing?

My local one is hut Wednesday afternoons as well. All POs can close for a half day during the week as they are open on Saturday mornings.

Rhubarb · 23/07/2003 15:19

My dd once did a wee on the PO floor, I didn't bother telling the woman behind the counter as she'd been particularly unhelpful and rude to me. So I hope it stank all day!

oliveoil · 23/07/2003 15:22

Rhubarb

My nearest one is now shut due to an armed robbery. mmmmmmm nice.

SoupDragon · 23/07/2003 15:22

But why do all the local post offices shut on the same afternoon? I tried the next one along and it was shut too. To put the icing on the cake, DS1 fell over, skinned his knees and an elbow and screamed all the way home.

No idea why they shut, pain in the proverbial if you ask me. Also, why do shops open at 11am on Sundays when I have been up since 6.30am and chomping at the bit to get in???????

Rhubarb · 23/07/2003 15:29

'Tis a Holy Day of Rest Oliveoil!

oliveoil · 23/07/2003 15:34

Not in my house. Pah.

Rhubarb · 23/07/2003 15:36

Well you do live in the Heathen capital of Britain! Their Temple is the pub, and they pray for more ciggies and shellsuits!

oliveoil · 23/07/2003 15:51

I think it is only the smaller sub post offices that shut, the main ones stay open, is there a big one nearby soupdragon?

mothernature · 23/07/2003 16:23

It must be a local thing, we have two PO's one closes on Tuesay afternoon the other Wednesday's. One's at the top of the hill other at the bottom.

Janstar · 23/07/2003 16:27

The people who run my post office can't speak english. And I live in a cute Hertfordshire village.

Clarinet60 · 23/07/2003 16:40

Janstar, do they use sign language to give people stamps, change, vehicle licences, etc? I'm confused.

motherinferior · 23/07/2003 16:41

I got to the post office yesterday, finally, with major tax bill to pay...and it had shut. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Janstar · 23/07/2003 16:46

They can get by if you ask for 'ten second class' or something equally simple, or if you just hand them things, but if you need to ask questions you're in trouble. I had to fill in an E111 application a few weeks ago, on behalf of DD1 who was going on a school trip. It was complicated and the instructions were unclear. I didn't even try going to my local PO, I drove 4 miles to another one.

Lindy · 23/07/2003 17:09

When I moved to the country I was amazed to find that not only is there 'half day closing' - but all shops, not just the PO, and the library etc close for lunch.
(Having worked for a huge multi-national retailer this was a huge shock!!)

SoupDragon · 23/07/2003 17:53

The large main post office is a pain to get to and park. I had thought that the 2nd one I tried, as it is big enough to do car tax discs, would be open. I wasn't prepared to try any more after that!! Snugs will just have to wait even longer to get her Spooks video back

at our ginormous Waitrose its open on a Sunday(scuttles off before Soupy wacks her)

Boe · 23/07/2003 18:49

Everything is open on a Sunday where I live - we have a sub post office about 400yds up the road and the people who own the shop are always willing to open it if it is only for something silly.

Big Waitrose in Bromley and Sainsburies in Chislehurst and Tesco in Sidcup and also Safeway in Sidcup - am just spoilt for chice really - but have yet to get to the now famous Lidl in Footscray which is my next mission now I have sent 3 what seems like school children but are actually grown business men to Brazil for the rest of the week!!

I lurve living in the big smoke!!! (Well is as near as I will ever be able to afford)

codswallop · 23/07/2003 18:51

Yes shops do open in the rest of the country too! but I meant the post office!

SoupDragon · 23/07/2003 19:02

I'm not even out in the country - I'm in South London!!

I don't care when else they may be open. The point is that neither of the POs I tried were open when I was there with 2 uncooperative preschoolers. Sunday in Waitrose is no use when you're standing outside a different, closed, one on a Wednesday afternoon...

I can well imagine your delight Soupdragon. Lindy, I was also amazed to discover that most shops here still have half day closing on Wednesdays and close between 1-2pm for lunch!

SoupDragon · 23/07/2003 19:18

WWW - I've finally got the lunchtime opening sorted so I deliberately delayed until after lunch to go up there. If only I'd gone earlier I would have found them open! No doubt when I do get there it will be pension day and I'll be stuck behind a line of confused, slow OAPs.

I thought 1/2 day closing had stopped now.

janster, i also live in herts, in a small new village, nearest post office is in hatfield town, takes ages to get there and the queue is always out the door. cant wait till the shops here are built, as there is a rumour we will get a post office too!!! doubt it tho.
