Dh has the possibility of a job up in East Kilbride and I am loooking for information about the area. Been told he could commute from glasgow or edinburgh, think i would prefer edinburgh. What are the house prices like? what are the schools like? where is a nice area? are people friendly?

Any info at all would be great- big decision to make!

Well they are flats so neighbours are vital. I mean 6 flats in a block with a shared back garden. The flats have high ceilings, great cornicing, all large rooms, bay windows, big hallway etc. But in varying states of repair and NOT like having your own house with three bedrooms. I've never lived in my own house, only flats so I might be the wrong person to talk to. The space is unbeatable though. My son can run around without serious injury as there's so much space. Don't know what's importnat to you though so if you wanted to have an honest chat about it I'd be happy to oblige.

eric thanks for being so helpful. i lived in a flat with dh before we had kids and we moved to our present home when ds1 was about 6 months old.it's not huge , but detached, 3 beds, a garden big enough for a swing and a sandpit. currently worth about 150,000 or 160,000.
basically scared of moving somewhere so new and different. can't imagine being in a flat with the boys- they are so noisy!
absolutely we will have to come up and visit and look at places. i think this is my way of coping with the stress!
if the house prices are as high as i'm starting to think, i don't know if its worth the move- if all pay rise is going to go on housing.

Had a look on
rightmove and there are quite a lot of fixed price houses about at the moment so you will know what you are paying

alexmum,

I'm sure you'll get something suitable for your money.
Look at this for example. Newton Mearns is a 'nice' area (good schools etc) and isn't too far from East Kilbride.
Only problem is the 'offers over' system which is a bit of a pain as you can't guarantee what the final price for the house is going to be.

Very scarey of course. We're on the ground floor so only rats can hear the racket! Absolutely right that you'd have to come up and have a look. If you decide to do that and job looks great let me know and you're welcome to come and see our place. Good luck with whatever you decide. And one last thing, I think North West England (Liverpool, Manchester) is similar to Glasgow in terms of friendliness and open-mindedness. Again, only my own experience.

If you have a look around I am sure you will find something you like in budget and of course you would get to live with all us friendly Glaswegians

Hi AlexMum.

I live in East Renfrewshire which is basically a suburb of Glasgow but some political gerrymandering got it's own council area coz the posh folk didn't want it lumped in with Glasgow. It's about 5 miles from East Kilbride and 4.5 miles from the dead centre of Glasgow. Schools are very good.

If it were me - a commute from Edinburgh would be a bit of a hassle.

Other nice areas around have already been mentioned here. Bothwell is nice (all the footballers used to buy their houses there), Hamilton and Motherwell not so nice.

Best areas in Glasgow itself would be the west end or some parts of the southside. Southside would be easier to commute to/from.

Rutherglen/Burnside has some nice houses and although again a suburb of Glasgow, is actually part of South Lanarkshire.

Poshest most expensive place would be Thorntonhall which is a stonesthrow from EK but waaaaaaaay out of most folk's budget.

I'd recommend Clarkston/Newton Mearns/Netherlee area of East Renfrewshire if you were interested in that area.

Give me a shout if you want any more info
