Tea Room the Fifteenth - The Viking Hall

Here we are in the 15th instalment of the Tea Room for the One Child Family board. All are welcome, whether parents of a single splendid offspring or any other number.
We are this time in a Viking Long Hall tearoom, complete with optional helmets, roaring log fires (in case of chilly spring evenings), rugs aplenty, and all the usual mod cons of life as well.
Our Viking tea room contains Mellors the gardener/handyperson with a talent for relaxing massage (amongst a variety of other characters including Bishops, camels, bison, horses, guinea pigs, dogs, etc etc for reasons that would take too long to explain but you're welcome to read the other Tea Room threads and prepare to have your mind thoroughly boggled). Plenty of tea/coffee/cake/virtual bolly always on offer.
Join us, relax, chat, enjoy.

Yay, I don't have too leave due to excessive youth!! ...and I'm not the youngest either. Your profile says you are 29 Tea, but I suppose you could have written your profile page years ago .

And yay for no rain at festivals! It is as usual raining here.

Coffee and brioche anyone?

thumbwitch · 01/06/2010 15:08

God there are some depressing threads on here sometimes - I've just been on this one and I can't believe the woman in it is putting up with the level of crap she is.

On a brighter note - MrTHumb has miniThumb for the night so I am not on tenterhooks, as I normally am. MiniThumb seems to have recovered from his vomiting episode but has not eaten properly since - he's just about managed his breakfast, although has left a couple of bits of toast (unusual) - has mostly refused lunch and then only eaten a forkful of dinner. He did say just before dinner tonight that his tummy hurt again - but nothing happened, except he refuesd to eat and had a crying jag when I told him he had to.

Whoops, that didn't stay bright for long!
Must go to bed, actually - am v. tired.

Night all!

CMOTdibbler · 01/06/2010 15:44

It's raining here now - and I had booked myself on a lovely evening hack out to the pub with dinner there (the horses eat the hedge) too. Humph.

Very strange this morning to wake up next to DS (who had appeared around 4am) and his Spiderman facepaint . I thought he would have a right mardy on when he realised that it was smeared (would not countenance taking it off last night), but between him waking up and going to look at it in his mirror, and me hoiking myself out of bed, he had got a flannel and was carefully washing it all off

Scone and clotted cream ?

Donki · 01/06/2010 20:20

After the last 2 days, I think that I may hide in the priest hole and never come back out...

CMOTdibbler · 01/06/2010 20:45

Hugs/ear strokes/grooming/gentle pats Donki

I'm lowering in a carrot cake decorated with real carrots (just defend it from the NMBs, you know what they are like with carrots), a bucket of tea, and a bale of sweet meadow hay.

Do you want to talk about it ?

RacingSnake · 01/06/2010 21:04

Rained here too, lots. About time we had some rain; I can't remember the last lot.

I think, the thing is never to use cotton buds in babies' orifices - apparently they can do a lot of damage on a wriggling baby.

CMOT, wasn't your pillow covered in paint? Ous always rubs off immediately, especially on DH's cream summer trousers.

CMOTdibbler · 01/06/2010 21:17

This stuff had staying power - his pillow had taken the brunt of what came off, but mine is OK. Previously, I had let him have his face painted, and then put him on my back in the sling, only to regret the effect on my top.

UniS · 01/06/2010 21:20

erwwweh to face painty child in your bed... rather you than me. I shall be sharing a room with boy for the rest of the week as he will not go to sleep sensibly sharing a room with his cousins. Have rejigged all bedrooms to fit them in. just waiting for them to arrive tomorrow now.

carrot cake decorated with real carrots.. Donk, you are liked and loved indeed.

thumbwitch · 01/06/2010 22:57

Oh dear Donk - have more ear rubs and pats and so on.

Well, it turns out that the depressing thread was a rather vicious troll claiming (in the end) to be a journalist. Even more depressing.

RS - I never used cotton buds when miniThumb was a baby - he's 2 1/2 now and doesn't wriggle as much (except when he's being dressed )

UniS · 01/06/2010 23:04

did you hear the trip trap as they crossed the bridge of unreality then??
So was Going Postal any good then? no TV so didn't see it. might rent it on DVD eventually.

Really MUST go and wash up. DH being away makes me come over all slovenly.

oxeye · 02/06/2010 01:06

Ahh. A rub and pat from me Donk.
Sorry your good will has been abused, Thumb
oxbloke and I have had a rather fractious evening. Not at all common for us and now I am feeling unsettled

thumbwitch · 02/06/2010 01:11

oh dear Oxeye - storm in a teacup type of fractious? or exposing unsuspected cracks type of fractious?
Not nice, either way

Have a pat on the shoulder/glass of gin/(hug)/ box of expensive chocolate/ corner of the horserug (delete as appropriate for your needs)

Oh I was all right - feel sorry for Fliight though, she was affected by it. Thing is with those far-fetched threads, you never know if the person is in serious need or a troll and most people start of circumspectly.

Sorry things are not going well Donki - thinking of you.

Hope storm clouds blowing away Oxeye.

A&O - we have found that having a dog is really good - because having a dog means that you have to take it for a walk - even if its raining - and you just get on and do it - because of that we find it much easier to get out than we might. I find we tend to count down from a number rather than up - there is no uncertainty about where you're going that way. If its not really urgent we start at 5, more pressing, 3 - we very rarely get below 2 though!

Spent a blissful bank holiday Monday in the garden. All day. Not having to oversee the use of secateurs, or stop mistlechick from trying to help too enthusiastically. Got lots done and garden looking somewhat more manageable. Mistlechick is in London with MiL - she now knows why we don't talk much - the amount of talking that happens when mistlechick is awake makes you cherish the silence when he's asleep

oxeye · 02/06/2010 16:02

Oh mistle that made me laugh. I shall keep my eyes open for a small boy talking and a granny with no ears left. Watch out Donki or you'll find your hind legs dropping off
oxbloke and I are fine but i got a bit niggly. You know that feeling when the very person you want to lean on is feeling a bit weak and wibbly too? It makes me feel cross at their limpness instead of kindly and sympathetic I fear I am just not a terribly nice person.
Anyway. All is better this morning but I should be feeling supportive of poor oxbloke after the year he's having and instead I feel a bit impatient and scratchy

mistlethrush · 02/06/2010 17:27

Oxeye - have had very similar feelings here with dh - had to bite my tongue at times not to come out with 'fgs I don't care what job you do, just go and get SOMETHING or at least take on the running or the house and some care of mistlechick'... Much is improved at the moment as he has a contract - could be the way to go - just need to be a bit more sure that work will come in etc.

I forgot to say - having had a blissful, childfree Monday which was spent doing gardening, a knock at the door came at 6,40 as we were about to have supper. Next door neighbour's twin girls (4) there, asking if they could play with mistlechick. Explained that he was with his granny, and that they'd have to come back when he was back to play with him. They asked to go in our garden to play without Mistlechick - as theirs was boring - I said that they couldn't as I wasn't able to keep an eye on them as I was doing something else... They said that they could look after themselves.... and...'But Daddy said we could play in your garden'. I eventually managed to usher them back into their garden (through the postman's gap) - but another knock 5mins later and they tried it on with DH instead. I think they got short shrift from him and did not try their luck a 3rd time!!!!

Scout19075 · 02/06/2010 21:08

thumb -- how's the bogey-nose?

mistlethrush -- how old is mistlechick? I'm guessing about 4 by your description?

Weather here very warm today. Walked to creative/messy play, enjoying the sun. BabyScout's new stroller seat arrived today so am looking forward to tomorrow when I can put him in his new "big boy seat". I fear he'll look tiny in it since he looks so big in his carseat now (that fits on his stroller).

Need to call the US to order my DN's birthday present but so can't bother to move off the sofa. I need a swift kick....

oxeye · 02/06/2010 21:27

for Scout in a friendly way
mistle- yes you share my pain lol at gaining twins

RacingSnake · 02/06/2010 21:33

Sorry, Donki, for the way you are feeling. I think, after what you have been through, it is not surprising and you will have to be very kind to yourself and very patient. I hope that the rest of the family are looking after you properly.

Wriggle has had a wonderful day. She has developed a new hobby, after a visit to Longleat on Friday - kissing butterflies. This requires a multitude of skills, including guile, stealth, bush craft, sudden bursts of speed and the ability to cope with rejection, so definitely character building. It made me wonder about CMOTiddler's plastic budgies - are they still with us in the long hut?

Scout19075 · 02/06/2010 21:35

Cheers, oxeye (but I'm still parked on my sofa watching tv).

thumbwitch · 03/06/2010 00:12

oh you've probably gone to bed now

Bogey was extracted by normal means - my fingernail (sorry). Mucho screaming in the process - I swear he thinks I'm trying to take out his brains or something - but Impressedness at the outcome (literally - how big, mummy? Ooh, big one)

RS - love the butterfly kissing game - sounds like the sort of thing miniThumb would get up to (he's too young to do subtle yet though)

Oxeye - glad nothing serious but also do know what you mean

Donki - thinking of you

MT - lol at cheeky twins but at the presumption of their Dad!

Amber - amber? amber! nope, she's typing too loud and fast to hear anything..

mistlethrush · 03/06/2010 08:39

I think probably that the twins had asked 'can we go and play with mistlechick in his garden' but misconstrued the answer 'yes' to mean that they had permission to play in our garden.... Luckily our side gate goes across the driveway (20's set up, garage to rear of house, drive to side) and is a good oldfashioned 5 bar gate - the trick is to lift it with your foot as you draw the bolt. Its not easy to climb as it has plastic mesh on it (presumably to stop previous owners' children climbing over) so at least they can't let themselves in (yet). However, in 10 or so years' time, I think that mistlechick might be the envy of his schoolmates, having friendly twins of the opposite sex living next door

Scout - mistlechick is just 5 (April) - sorry, been posting since the 1st tearoom, so forget to introduce, when there are relatively new people around (and I've been a bit quiet too!).

MiL is totally exhausted having had him for 3.2 days on her own - but I've abandoned her with him this morning and am at work - talking of which, I'd better get on and do some!

CMOTdibbler · 03/06/2010 08:46

Racing - yes, we still have the plastic budgies (Angela and Angela ). I had to buy some birdseed the other day as apparently they were hungry.
Kissing butterflies is so sweet ! Is the butterfly place at Sherbourne still going ?

Was trying last night to pack camping stuff neatly and in an organised manner. This is not my general style, so a bit of a change

Scout19075 · 03/06/2010 10:21

mistlethrush -- Ahh, so I was close with my guess of 4. And yes, I think he will be the envy of all of his friends being friends with girl twins. Are they identical? (And don't worry about intros, I just ask questions!)

ox and thumb -- Didn't do it in the end. Really must do it today! DN's birthday is this month and customs sometimes holds my packages for longer than I think they need to.

CMOT -- oh, camping! I'm going on my annual Guide camping week in August (we usually go in July but it's a special camp this year). Where are you going?

BabyScout's new stroller seat arrived yesterday. I've set it up this morning while he's napping, so will give it a spin when he gets up. It's a big boy seat but looking at it he's going to look like a baby in it. LOL

Anyone fancy a cake?

mistlethrush · 03/06/2010 10:33

Cakes are always good Scout - I see you've got some banana and cinamon muffins which will do me nicely thanks.

We only ever had a MB for mistlechick - he never had the car seat adaptor - just got shifted from his car seat into the pushchair (unless going directly from home). I am SO GLAD that he always had a forward-facing pushchair - the thought of what he'd be like if we hadn't stunted is conversation and other skills by having him always forward facing is frightening ()

Guide camp [shiver]. Last one I did was to the Sherburn celebration camp that we had international guides visiting for. The large tent we had for the group leaked. It rained, so we weren't allowed in our normal tents and had to huddle in selected areas of the big tent to avoid the drips. Cooking was really difficult because of the rain. We did perform a show at the end of the week though, in front of the castle (I was in the orchestra!).

And the thought of being in the same tent as mistlechick also makes me have nightmares!!! Goodness knows what time he'd wake up We're thinking of getting a blackout blind to go next to the glass behind his curtains that have blackout linings....

Twins - identical - yes. Still havent' worked out which is which! Although they do dress differently.
