Tea Room the Fifteenth - The Viking Hall

Here we are in the 15th instalment of the Tea Room for the One Child Family board. All are welcome, whether parents of a single splendid offspring or any other number.
We are this time in a Viking Long Hall tearoom, complete with optional helmets, roaring log fires (in case of chilly spring evenings), rugs aplenty, and all the usual mod cons of life as well.
Our Viking tea room contains Mellors the gardener/handyperson with a talent for relaxing massage (amongst a variety of other characters including Bishops, camels, bison, horses, guinea pigs, dogs, etc etc for reasons that would take too long to explain but you're welcome to read the other Tea Room threads and prepare to have your mind thoroughly boggled). Plenty of tea/coffee/cake/virtual bolly always on offer.
Join us, relax, chat, enjoy.

Oxeye - cooee - have you any legal eagle advice for this lady?

Or if any of you other lovely ladies are legal eagles, can you help?

I know narthing, so can't help at all but it appears to involve some provision for SN DC by local authorities that she has been refused.

Scout19075 · 13/06/2010 12:47

Mmmm, root beer float. Is very nice. DH not such a great fan of root beer, but will drink it if he doesn't like what else is on offer. He'd much prefer this which I find utterly repulsive.

I need a nap -- could someone please toss me the fur-covered throw pillows and a blanket? I'll just nap under the feast table. (Thanks.)

Scout19075 · 13/06/2010 19:53

(I hate migraines -- someone please pass the headache pills.)

UniS · 13/06/2010 20:08

re baby scout camping with the girlie's, all in one sound good. yes to shoes or boots of some kind, keep his feet warm and protected, he may well pull them off of course, but hey you tried and it sets a good example to the guides. Does he have any like this already , boy was in that kind till he was walking, he crawled and cruised outside in them. got wet feet sometimes but was protected from rough stuff.
Kamick style boots might be nice, but kinda clunky on a crawling babe.

Blankets etc. boy never rolled at that age, so he was fine on a karrimat with a blanket under and over( pinned together at edges), just a single layer fleece was OK for him. Grow bag was 2.5 tog but very old. Never put a hat on him for bed as he wouldn't sleep in the pram with a hat on. Just long sleeve vest and sleepsuit. Word from friends was that their babies got very cold in travel cots in tents and would spend half the night in with mum in consequence. I think they had bigger tents than us , we were squashed together in a 2/3 man backpackers tent.

Been letterboxing today, up on t'moor. found lots, boy was a right eagle eyes. 2 he found that I think DH wouldn't have spotted.

Scout19075 · 13/06/2010 21:07

Thanks UniS. BabyScout doesn't have any shoes yet. Was at the grocerystore today and saw some really cute little croc-like things I thought might be good as well. They also had shoes like your link. Will probably get several types/styles for the ever-changing English weather. Right now BabyScout only rolls one direction tummy to back but has taken to sleeping on his side the last few weeks, so scouches around to get comfy but seems to go from that side to his back and back again. Last summer DH got us a 4-man tent (in anticipation of future camping with he who is now BabyScout) -- before then we were living in his 2 man pup. He also splurged and bought, as a present for me, a double sleeping bag, a double self-inflating mat, and camp pillows (I was 6.5 months preggers and did three weeks of camping in a row, so he kept coming back to site with surprises to make me more comfortable). I can always put BabyScout on the mat with us since none of us move a lot in our sleep and then he's not so "scared" because we're there.

What's letterboxing?

UniS · 13/06/2010 21:24

letter boxing is a bit like geo cacheing but with out the bits of tat and with stamps to collect impressions of in a book. Started on dartmoor 150 yrs ago, now appearing in a few other places and there are thousands of them out there to find.

Scout19075 · 13/06/2010 21:32

Oooh, that looks fun! We go to Devon on holiday every year and go to Dartmoor at least once while there. Maybe when BabyScout's a bit bigger.....

roseylee · 13/06/2010 22:03

Hi all, am new to the tea room, lovely to find it though, especially as we have one boy, four years old, and so far no feelings to have more from me, although DH does want more, interesting... I do wonder what will happen when DS gets older and not as gorgeously cuddly and keen on being with us as he is now, especially on holiday, will he be unbelievably bored and resentful. Anyway, nice to meet you all, any advice very welcome.

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 13/06/2010 22:38

Hello, Roseylee. Lovely to meet you. Would you like some Bolly?

I don't think I have any useful advice to offer, except to say that you need to make a decision on having or not having another baby based on what you and your husband want, and what works for you as a family, rather than on trying to stop your son being bored and resentful. He may never be bored and resentful as an only child - especially if you don't encourage him to think that being an only child is a negative thing - but, equally,, he might have a sibling and yet still be bored and resentful. Personality is a big factor here.

Sorry, have rambled on far too long.

Would you like some twiglets with the Bolly?

oxeye · 13/06/2010 22:43

Hi. Roseylee and welcome! I have a Ds nearing four and no plans for others. My advice? Grab a Bolly and get comfy!!

Scout. When we camp with Oxboy we just all sleep in same tent and bit. We've done lazy blow up bed and duvet since oxboy 'cos it's been car camping not hiking Yes to him in normal jammies end grobag. No to hat

I am happy to report boy has been very cuddly and very happy all weekend. No grudges just as you wise women predicted ;)

Bensmum76 · 14/06/2010 05:51

Hi all, am finding this tea room a very interesting read and would love to come along for a visit every now and then. I may now be very conversational but will definitely help myself to some bolly and twiglets!
Awake very early this morning and don't actually have to be up till 6 so thought I'd pop on to here and say hi. Hope you all have a good day.

Scout19075 · 14/06/2010 07:40

Morning all!

Welcoming Roseylee and Bensmum. I'm still new here, too.

Thanks oxeye. We just camp, too, no hiking. But I usually also have Guides with me and some of them aren't into hard work like hiking. LOL Glad boy has been in a happy way!

Am going to call the doctor for BabyScout today. He's had a runny nose since we got back from the States, as well as a bit of a cough. He doesn't seem that bothered by it (only rarely) but it's driving me nuts. It's probably just a long-running cold but I'd rather get him checked. Also must remember to pack for tomorrow. BabyScout's Nana & G-pa are going to babysit him while DH and I go to DH's work dinner. First time out without BabyScout! (I went out without him a couple of times in the States, but only once did my parents put him to bed -- Nana has to put him to bed tomorrow so I hope he behaves himself!)

Happy Monday!

thumbwitch · 14/06/2010 07:49

Hello New People! Nice to see you, grab a cup of something from the breakfast bar of requirement!
Mine's a hot chocolate with multiple toppings and a flake - it's cold here (I am in Australia, btw, so post at Odd Hours)

Scout - hope BabyScout is ok. I am having a runny nose/sneezy/ itchy eye thing yet again - I think it's fortnightly at the mo, possible monthly - either way it's getting severely on my tits. It's the eyes that annoy me...

I have one DS, miniThumb, who is 2.6 and just starting to Know His Own Mind properly (aka setting up his will against mine). It's interesting.

Scout19075 · 14/06/2010 08:05

Mmm, thumb, can I have a hot chocolate too? Yum-yum-yum!

And if it makes you feel any better, BabyScout knows his mind too, and he's only 7.5 months old! I was wondering if maybe had a spring allergy but think I read those don't develop until they're about 2 years old? Dunno, but would rather get him looked at just in case.

What to do today....?

amberlight · 14/06/2010 08:42

Morning all! Welcome Roseylee and Bensmum!

PS we're starting to get towards the 1000 post mark again folks...do we wish to start pondering the next location of the Tea Room perchance, for later in the week?

I need to get going with the training materials for tomorrow...

Poor babyscout , still best to get it checked I think. Enjoy your evening out - is everything ready for that?

thumbwitch · 14/06/2010 09:05

Hmmm - how do you feel about a Shangri-La style place?

MaryBS · 14/06/2010 10:08

Sounds interesting, what did you have in mind?

thumbwitch · 14/06/2010 10:37

well - the hidden valley with beautiful views and crystal streams of course, and some inter-fareastern type of chalet things set around a Serene Courtyard with some ever-blooming Japanese cherry trees, lots of refreshing fragrant teas, silk cushions, tinkling tiny waterfalls and bonsai trees, Gardens of Tranquility etc.

And of course none of us age at all while we're there.

Sound good?

MaryBS · 14/06/2010 12:01

Sounds bliss!

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 14/06/2010 13:53

Hello, Bensmum!

Shangri-la sounds bliss. I have a sewing project I need to get on with, but while I'm doing that I'll also run up Mellors' new uniform for when he's serving drinks on the terrace. Something like this, perhaps.

Organic hummus and pitta bread on the distressed oak sideboard (formerly used by the Viking NMBs for axe-throwing target practice) for those needing a light lunch...

Scout19075 · 14/06/2010 14:50

BabyScout is fine. GP thinks he probably has just a cling-on cold virus or has had a series of cold viruses back to back. Would make sense given how many baby/toddler groups we do in a week, in addition to Guides and Senior Section, plus other meetings with adults. Because he seems well in himself and is still eating/drinking, GP not worried. I wasn't either, but thought I should get him checked over just in case. GP is also going to follow up with the hospital to get him his ECHO that they wanted to do after he turned 6 months. He was a good boy while he was being looked over (GP very thorough and did all sorts of things to him). I know the NHS gets a bad rap, and it's all postcode lottery, but I've had nothing but good services from my GP surgery and my specialists at the hospital.

So much to do, so little time!

thumbwitch · 14/06/2010 16:55

That looks rather lush, smallbunch! mmmmm

That's good-ish news, Scout - hope he gets clear of the sniffles soon. I always had very good service from my GP in England, and have now found a good one here as well. It does make a difference!

It's our wedding anniversary tomorrow (well later today for me but I need to go back to sleep again first) and we are going to the cinema for the first time since miniThumb was born - to watch The A-Team! I hope it lives up to my expectations, I used to love that show when I was young.

Scout19075 · 14/06/2010 19:37

Thanks, thumb. And Happy Anniversary!

DH text me and said he'd be home late -- as it is, normal is 7:30-8:00. Anyone fancy dinner?
