Tea Room the Fourteenth

1000 replies

amberlight · 21/03/2010 18:09

Welcome to the 14th instalment of the Tea Room. It's now officially spring, and we've moved the tea room to a Gipsy caravan pulled by the tea room horses, which is making its way up the countryside in an effort to follow spring. There are of course hedgerows filled with spring flowers, Mellors the handsome gardener/driver/handyperson, the usual virtual Bishops, and the assorted animals and characters from previous tea rooms. All are very welcome to join in with us parents of one (or indeed more!) for general chat and the occasional very odd conversation. Climb aboard, grab a cuppa, enjoy the view, relax!...

Hello all - bit worried about possible dearth of creature comforts on Viking ships (think some of you might have been spending too much time in the company of very small boys ) - how about a luxury camper van? a tudor manor house with exquisite garden? (then I wouldn't have to plant and weed and water it??)

having a good day so far - more later

Jacksmama · 27/04/2010 17:09

I like the idea of a Tudor manor house... as long as I don't have to mind my manners too much...

drivingmisscrazy · 27/04/2010 18:49

with National Trust embellishments (i.e. tea and cake - oh how I miss English tea and cake)...problem with Vikings is that they didn't have tea!!

RacingSnake · 27/04/2010 19:53

I am quite happy with either Viking Longhouse (not longship - I get seasick) or Tudor mansion. Do we have real Tudors in it? Put me down as a vote either way. Do we actually have a fence I can sit on at the moment?

Thank you for suggestion of Little Things by India Arie. I looked at lyrics and they are perfect, but can't get it from Amazon Downloads.

MindySimmons · 27/04/2010 20:52

Oh darn it! It is on Napster and iTunes

RacingSnake · 27/04/2010 21:08

Never tried iTunes ,sad person emoticon> but now could be a good time to try!

UniS · 27/04/2010 21:46

I'm back, brifly.

we are moved and in, we have phone line and appear to have broadband despite being told it would be next week.

new house is lovely. garden is great, boy and friend were luxuriating on the spongy moss filled lawn with bare feet this afternoon in the sunshine.
Have not red back at all yet, so Hi to all, waves to those that are looking. virtual coffee cake and dark mars bars on teh counter for you. I'll be back when i can...

UniS · 27/04/2010 21:57

long house, long house. they are very cozy, with a girt roaring fire in the centre, rushes on the floor. hairey viking dogs lolling about and some very fit looking blonde next door neighbours. They have taller than average viking hats with a sort of mitreish look about them...

If I'm on line torrow and no one else has done it... I will. BUT may lose broadband again so not promising.

RacingSnake · 27/04/2010 23:13

Tried to download something you apparently need to download iTunes but kept timing out. Thing is, I have an iTunes folder in 'my music' with some downloaded songs in it. Didn't like napster - kept making me pay more.

Wonderful World is great - have alreadyoverused it. Would be greatful for any recommendations of 'makes you think' type music. I was going tp use 'halleluya' by leonard cohen, but there are a couple of dodgy lines. I love Sind So kleine Haender' by Bettina Wegner, but it is hardly suitable for 11-year olds...

thumbwitch · 28/04/2010 00:08

I vote Viking Longhouse - we are not being transported back in time so tea and the like will still be available - to me, it's a "historical experience" place so we can still have all our creature comforts, just in a vast hall with horns to drink tea or bolly out of etc. etc.

Trying out my hair in plaits for the authentic look...

MindySimmons · 28/04/2010 07:37

Hi RS, found the download on amazon... www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001KU8LTG/sr=1-4/qid=1272436597/ref=sr_1_4_digr?ie=UTF8&qid=1272436597& sr=1-4

amberlight · 28/04/2010 08:21

Righto - I think most votes are for a luxurious and well equipped Viking longhouse, then a Tudor mansion in a few weeks' time maybe when we've used up another thread. And UniS to set it up if you have a chance to

We've still got a few more lanes to traverse in this tearoom though... It has been remarkably peaceful, despite all the new (welcome) faces that have popped in along the way.

There's a great Tom Holt novel with Vikings in it... as all TH novels, things get a bit complicated.... definitely enjoyed that one though.

Currently reading Wolf Hall which is very good - although rather long, so probably won't finish it in time for book club evening - but I will probably continue with it despite that....

thumbwitch · 28/04/2010 10:05

I never did fully get to grips with Tom Holt - although God knows I tried, I bought several of his books but I always got the feeling that he was just trying too hard to be funny. I don't know whether he was actively competing with Terry Pratchett or not, but to me it felt like he was trying to be as good as him and falling somewhat short. I think the one I liked best was Ye Gods! but I'm pretty sure I lent it to someone and never got it back nor bothered to replace it.

Is Valhalla the one you're talking about, MT? - I might give it a go if it is. I have joined a library so they might be able to get it for me!

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 28/04/2010 10:29

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Muppets link! It had everything I most love - 70s disco and Kermit the Frog. Dr Mellors and I were bopping around the ward as we watched. Thank you Scout.

I think I have the chest to be a Viking maiden.

zazen · 28/04/2010 10:37

Hi all!

I like the idea of a long house - remember Bjorn's house in the Hobbit? Not sure if I'd be overwhelmed at the raging bears outside at night, but that's kindof analogous to RL?!

Will get my bag of white pebbles out for sprinkling - we should put our trusted caravan horsey out to grass for the summer, well away from the hahas?
No doubt Mellors will find the perfect pastures.

zazen · 28/04/2010 10:40

he he he SBOF, I have the chest to be a germanic soprano! Or a sailing ship.
Thanks for the warm muffins enjoy your RnR

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 28/04/2010 10:47

Zazen! You're back!

thumbwitch · 28/04/2010 10:50

I definitely don't have the chest for a Wagnerian Valkyrie - never mind.

(SBOF - have LOTS of bolly so you forget to leave again!)

amberlight · 28/04/2010 11:26

Trilling a Wagnerian aria? Is that sort of thing allowed in public?

RacingSnake · 28/04/2010 11:41

Thanks, Mindy - I am technologically totally incompetent!! (Which is obviously why I was my school's ICT coordinator for 8 years! Think 'Yes Minister')

mistlethrush · 28/04/2010 12:29

Who's afraid of Beowulf I think TW. I don't see him remotely in the same light as TP though - TP is a world on its own. TH brings somethign completely alien (time wise, quite often, or mythical) into 'RL'. I also liked Paint your dragon....

Hi Zazen - how's it going...

SBOF - I don't think that it would be frowned upon if the practitioneers were to hear of your little sorties onto this thread - please keep dropping in!

zazen · 28/04/2010 12:47

It's best not done in public I find Amber - all that trilling can be lethal, just look at what happens here

zazen · 28/04/2010 12:58

oops - this is the link here
