Tea Room the Thirteenth

Welcome to the newest instalment of the One Parent Families tea room. As it's heading for spring, we're now in a nice warm orangery surrounded by woodland filled with spring flowers. All are very welcome to join in with us parents of one (or indeed more!), the tea room gardener/handyman Mellors, various virtual Bishops (don't ask) and a variety of other characters from previous tea rooms. Grab a cuppa, relax!...

Poor Pinkflipflop hasn't stumbled in then? I've read and re-read her OP numerous times and honestly can't see why it's upset people so much ... no wonder I occasionally upset people myself and can't figure out why.

I've missed loads again ... I will pick up on the last post then - MaryBS, I remember Barnarby as a child (had a bear named after him), he was sort of orangey I think. Current Barnaby-on-TV is a vile thing, and we have yet to be sent a creature home from school. DD is dying to get the doll that comes home from Rainbows though. When she does, I plan to do Olivia's Alternative Weekend chez DCMB, in which she will be photographed drinking gin and watching CSI.

I never know what's going on anyway, so it doesn't bother me . Poor brain won't hold the detail. It's like putting water in a sieve...

But it's never meant badly.

Teas, coffees, soup and not-as-lewd-as-normal rolls available.

Will go and examine Pinkflipflop's utterances...

Link to Pinkflipflop for incompetent people?

Marty, what is that poem you almost quoted?

I'm sure I have told you how my class once kidnapped the Barnaby belonging to KS1 and sent ransom messages? We had great fun ... we were going t o send an ear, but had to stop due to tauma.

MaryBS · 14/02/2010 15:05

Don't call me Mary . Its part of the theme tune for the Barnaby the Bear of my childhood:

Barnaby the Bear's my name,
Never call me Jack or James,
I will sing my way to fame,
Barnaby the Bear's my name.

Birds taught me to sing,
When they took me to their king,
First I had to fly, in the sky so high,
So high, so high, so high, so high.

So, if you want to sing this way,
Think of what you'd like to say,
Add a tune and you will see,
Just how easy it can be.

Treacle pudding, fish and chips,
Fizzy drinks and liquorice,
Flowers, rivers, sand and sea,
Snowflakes and the stars are free,
la la etc...

So, Barnaby the Bear's my name,
Never call me Jack or James,
I will sing my way to fame,
Barnaby the Bear's my name.

Apparently in America he was called Jeremy, here's Jeremy, singing virtually the same song to the same tune:

MaryBS · 14/02/2010 15:05

or even Marty, you can call me Mary

teafortwo · 14/02/2010 16:29

Basically Pinkflipflop is preggie and is thinking that it would be nice to just have one baby but getting lots of hassle about it being a "selfish thing to do..." etc etc... she opened a thread to dicuss this without being specific and...

Well...

it got a bit nasty ... Here you go R.S -www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/911873-Do-you-think-having-just-1-child-is-selfish

I have lit the fire and put a hot choc on the pan ready for her hopeful arrival in the tearoom.

mistlethrush · 14/02/2010 17:09

Ow - that was an uncalled for response to Pinkflipflop's innocent question!

DontCallMeBaby · 14/02/2010 18:40

Sorry for referring to another thread then buggering off for the day, and thank you T for pointing others to it! I think the poor woman touched a raw nerve or two.

MaryBS · 14/02/2010 21:45

Eek for poor Pinkflipflop, many of those comment were totally uncalled for!

I led Evensnog tonight, and it went really well! I'm finally getting the hang of it! It was proper sung Evensnog too, and even when the organist forgot to give me a starting note, I was able to hit the right note and lead the singing Woohoo!

CMOTdibbler · 14/02/2010 21:50

Evensnog ? Is that a special Valentines service ? Sounds fun to me

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 14/02/2010 21:52

Cor. Pinkflipflop's thread got rather heated, didn't it? Which seems odd, as the issue has been debated lots of times on here without attracting that amount of hysteria. I do hope she pops in for a cuppa or Bolly, depending on which she prefers.

DCMB - I hadn't spotted before that your dd is a Rainbow. As a delinquent progressive Brown Owl, I was and [snort] at Olivia drinking gin and watching CSI.

Anyone for a romantic Valentine's cocktail? I am going out for cocktails at the Savoy later - CrazyBloke is just getting the car ready.

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 14/02/2010 21:58

Drat. Crossed posts.

Wish I had gone to Mary's Evensnog. Do you think it might catch on? It would reverse the decline in church attendance, methinks.

UniS · 14/02/2010 22:06

LOL at evensnog . DH went to book of common prayer service this afternoon, no singing OR snogging at all. I got to stay home with boy and play fire engines and washing up.

We had a fun day out on teh moors today, letterboxing, found 5. walked about 3 miles.

Last night was pudding club. I have meet a new pudding I'm rather fond of. Ginger and banana pudding. bit like a sponge pud with a very syrupy goooeyness underneath. Tasted just like melted gingernuts.
So as I'm sure that will go down well round here, I've baked one in teh tea room aga, it did not over flow the tin, it did not leave a mess everywhere and it has zero caleries, so tuck in. custard and cream of your choice are right alongside.

MaryBS · 14/02/2010 22:11

Our church is rising in numbers. Maybe it IS because of the evensnog!

We DID have a conversation several threads back about Mellors and his shortie surplice and backless cassock. Maybe its time for him to do a repeat performance?

Pudding club sounds fun! We had a lovely raspberry creme brulee tonight, which tickled my tastebuds!

Hark at you and the Savoy, StillCrazy ! Hope you have a wonderful time.

DontCallMeBaby · 14/02/2010 22:21

Evensnog?!

StillCrazy, DD also thought until I disabused her last Monday that Olivia was a boy. I suspect she misheard the name as Oliver (the name of her beloved).

I am DEFINITELY doing the Alternative Weekend - truth be told, I am nearly as keen as DD to have the doll home, for this very reason. Hehheh.

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 14/02/2010 22:32

Mary - 'Tis only a virtual trip to the Savoy, sadly. And an excuse to show off a picture of CrazyBloke and his car.

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 14/02/2010 22:38

Oops. That would be a conversation that somehow got through the spellchecker. Am a very bad typist.

thumbwitch · 14/02/2010 22:49

I think there were some very raw nerves touched there - but how silly to blame it on the OP, whose opening post was pretty inocuous really. People ought to take responsibility for their own touchiness in some instances - the poor woman was only asking questions, not stating anything.

we are having a bit of a nightmare here with miniThumb - my fault - I introduced him to the Lion King on video in the UK and then declined my Dad's offer to take the video with me, on the principle that I should be able to get it on DVD in Australia. How wrong! We have managed to divert him temporarily with Madagascar instead but he's still asking for Lion King at least 4 times a day. I can get it, but it will take 14d to arrive and is a bit expensive but hey! (Does that mean I am spoiling him if I get hold of it for him?)

Also LOL at Mary's Evensnog

DontCallMeBaby · 14/02/2010 22:53

I don't know if my sewing skills would run to miniature leather trousers, but if Olivia's clothes even come off ... caught in flagrante with one of DD's teddies perhaps?

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 14/02/2010 23:12

Hmm, DCMB. I think I would draw the line at Olivia porn.

Thumb - Do you think MiniThumb will still be as keen on the Lion King in a fortnight? I think I might play for time before brandishing the credit card. We are developing a serious Amazon habit here. We watched South Pacific last night.

Bolly?

DontCallMeBaby · 15/02/2010 08:26

Hey, scrolling down I noticed that Amber said the priesthole was available to people of any faith - can it be used by people of no faith? Not that I'm so abashed I need to hide, but nice to know.

mistlethrush · 15/02/2010 08:29

Sorry I missed you all last night - out rehearing St John (Bach) for today's performance - will take rather a long lunchbreak and make up hours during week as its half term!

I left mini-loon in front of TV () and dh still asleep. I have asked mini-loon to make sure that he wakes up fairly soon... think I might give mini-loon a call!

I like the thought of evensnog... I joined a small choir at Uni and we did sung evensnog once a fortnight in a fairly local church - low attendance... Once winter's evening we sung evensong to an empty nave - and they even turned the lights off to save electricity!

Our church seems to be doing oK wiht numbers generally - will have to go and see how the new vicar's doing .

And I'm pleased to say that we've had a lovely weekend with mini-loon... it seems as though we may be making progress towards him appreciating that if he does his best (we're not expecting perfection!) we will be pleased with him and everyone will be a lot happier!

AandO · 15/02/2010 11:14

Morning all! What's going on?!! Seem to have lost track of all conversation. Pudding club is a great idea, as is evensnog !! Mistlethrush, what do you do for a living? Just with the rehearsing Bach.

Anyone do anything valentiney yesterday? I didn't . Potty training is going very very badly. Also am very broke this week and had to ask ds preschool if I could not pay this week and pay twice next week after I've been paid instead . I have a good job, and a decent salary, but everything seems to cost such a lot (mortage, childcare etc). Am a bit miserable today .

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 15/02/2010 11:28

AandO - There is an anarchic strand in the tea room, which means that - although they are generally frowned upon on MN - we sometimes indulge in (((hugs))) and supportive pats on the shoulder. Would you like one? And how about a hot chocolate with flake and hot buttered toast with honey? All guaranteed calorie-free, of course.

We didn't really do anything Roman Tick, as we (of course) had CrazyGirl in tow. But we did go out for the afternoon to a wetlands centre and had a nice walk in the gloom.

I think this month is always financially testing, as all the Christmas credit card bills come home to roost. Is the potty training really that grim? Take heart, everyone always gets it in the end. As someone pointed out on here once, you never hear of 12 year olds in nappies, do you?

I need to finish my Valentine Day chocolates before Lent starts - would anyone like to share?

ljhooray · 15/02/2010 12:36

Morning ladies,

Felt I have lurked at the window of the tea room for too long. Now having put the windowlene and j cloth down to remove the greasy pawprints I've left behind looking in, I am loving this incarnation of the tea room and yes StillCrazy, I would love a choccie (dh is in the consumerist nonsense category I'm afraid, so will live vicariously through your left over chocolates )

Well, just took a looksy at the like to PinkFlipFlop - crikey what a bunfight! Agreed, not offensive but knowing the vitriol you can experience on MN, pretty naive. If you're out there but have understandably changed your name, pop in and a large G&T will be waiting.
Loved the eco thread too - will now only dress dd in kaftans and flowers to annouce my earth loving credentials to the world!

Now, where's the key to the drinks cabinet? Organic, locally sourced sloe gin only of course
