I am conscious that there are so many expectations from people on how an only child experiences life in childhood and in adulthood. Crazy stereotypes, even in this forum!

I know several onlies who had such varying experiences of being an only child and have had very different experiences as adults too... that I want to start a thread where ADULT ONLIES share their experience (positive and negative).

If only to prove that there is no such thing as a typical experience of being an only.

I too am an only. My mum never really got on with her huge family so although they lived locally we never really saw them, my dad's family lived miles away too so although we got on with them we only saw them a few times a year. I was, and still am, very good at making my own entertainment.

Apart from odd moments in childhood, I always enjoyed being an only. However I decided I wanted more than 1 child, and luckily now have 2 (I would love more but for various reasons that ain't happening).

I still am very solitary and enjoy my own company. I've often wondered if it was because I was an only, but ds1 seems to be similar, and, although my mum is one of 6, so is she.
