Tea room the 5th - welcome to the yurt

1000 replies

UniS · 24/02/2009 10:49

Welcome to the tea room. A warm welcome to everyone, whether you have one child, none, or ten. This is a tea-and-muffin or booze-and-sofasorcanapees sanctuary for all. But certain standards of behaviour continue to apply - anyone engaging in fisticuffs will be ejected by George Clooney, ably assisted by Mellors the Gardener.

You have found us- did you like teh slide/ bridge over teh HaHa. Teh priest hole is still available, its just over there.

Mellors and I have erected the yurt, strewn rugs around and good a good fire going in the wood burner. The place is feeling toasty and warm with not a draft to be felt. The kettle is now singing away on the hob. selection of teas for all taste on the shelf along with the hand made by potters mugs. Mellors very ably fitted teh yurt window with a window sill onto which can be placed a selection of pot plants and george.

Can someone sort out RP ( who I think came over with the sofa) and plump up the hay pile for donk.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 19:50

Bolly and gourmet olives comcing right up, Mistle! Do you want to tell us about it or would you prefer to forget?

DJ MadBad has selected this kicking tune for Amber and Mr Amber.

teafortwo · 07/03/2009 20:31

Congratulations Catita!!!!!

We will have to have an online babyshower in your honour nearer the push !

I love the idea of other people being pregnant... as long as it isn't me! Coooool bananas and hurray!!!!

My very close friend is also cooking a baby and her favourite name is Finley - but we are trying to establish the proper way of spelling it.... if anyone has any ideas pop into baby names and tell me what you think - I have a thread on the go there!!!

According to the baby names laaaaayyydies the spelling I put in the title is chavtastic so it is getting quite a response!!!!

So - champagne all round to celebrate a new Tearoom member - To Catitabumb!!!! Cheers x x x

CMOTDibbler · 07/03/2009 20:34

We had a lovely time - always a bit nerve racking going out with a couple I don't know, and DH typically vague on what the DW of his friend is like, so was a bit worried she would be very corporate wife. She wasn't at all, and she entertained me with her tales of working and having teenagers.

I did discover though that Beetroot rissotto doesn't work.

And that you should not let your toddler play with your makeup. His nursery nurse will arrive to babysit to find him naked, adorned with eyeshadow over tummy and eyes, and eating fishcakes in front of Charlie and Lola

Catita - not quite how you expected to tell DH !

Madbad - the great thing about that dress is it seems to flatter a great variety of body shapes. My colleague has it too, and it looks great on her very good norkage. It also doesn't crease, so great for travelling

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 20:51

Cmot - That's a wonderful image! I never think to look in FCUK because I associate them with jeans for lithe young things, rather than dresses for (ahem) stylish ladies in their middle years.

And thinking of age, has anyone seen Racing recently? I was a bit concerned that she might now be living in some other dimension, because I noticed that her claimed age had recently gone straight from (if I remember rightly) 73 to 82.

Hmm, just remembered that I meant to be all stern and bossy and tell Catita that there is nothing in the marriage contract about cleaning up one's spouse's vomit, especially when one is in an interesting condition, and that therefore - should there be any recurrence - she should direct her dh towards the mop and bucket!

More bolly, anyone?

mistlethrush · 07/03/2009 20:59

Yes please!

MB - see MT's bedtime scenario earlier...

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 21:15

Ooops. Sorry, MT, I had somehow missed your post when turning the (virtual) page.

DontCallMeBaby · 07/03/2009 21:44

Eh? What? Ooooh, congratulations Cat!

I'm making a pavlova. I've done the cornflour and vinegar thing for the first time ever, and it certainly looks rather good. Well, it did before it went in the oven, I now can't see it because my oven door is so filthy. I suspect pavlova is one of those things not helped by opening the oven door for a peruse?

So, in return for virtual pavlova tomorrow, does anyone know how long you can keep egg yolks in the fridge? I fancy carbonara on Monday with, but don't know how they keep.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 21:49

Evening, DCMB!

Here's some bolly. Would you like a gastronomic indulgence twiglet?

I have no idea about the egg yolks, so have decided to don my pixie boots and ra-ra skirt, set the yurt glitter balls spinning and dance around my handbag.

mistlethrush · 07/03/2009 21:56

MadBad - dancing! Pass me another glass of bolly and I might join you...

Catitainahatita · 07/03/2009 21:56

Evening ladies. Is there any mineral water going?

DS and DH are on nap no. 2 today. Most unusual for DS, not at all surprising for DH. Still, it means I get to come and chat to you before you go off to bed for a change.

Thank you all for your good wishes.

MadBad I would usually refuse to clean up too, but since Dh, after covering the bedroom floor, said that he would go to sleep in the spare room "so as not to disturb you and DS" and promptly vanished to snore it off, I was left in a very smelly room. It was me or noone!

Antenatal care is not so brillant here within the state system. They work on a tight budget and are unable to deal all that well with high risk pregnancies. Last time I ended up supplementing my care with a private gynacologist, so I could get all the tests and goodnesses knows what.

MT Exhausted children at bedtime are the most difficult thing to deal with. I sympathise a lot. I hope it all goes better tomorrow.

CMOT Glad to hear it all went well. I'm sure your DS was very happy to be thus painted and so to be "just like mummy".

Catitainahatita · 07/03/2009 22:00

DCMB: if yur fridge is pretty reliable and you don't keep them in the door, the yolks will be good for a good three days, I'd have thought. Athough to be on the safe side I'd give them a good sniff before using them. Let's face it, rotten eggs tend to be pretty easy to spot.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 22:12

Hello there, Catita.

We have zair Perrier, zair Evian, zair San Pellegrino and zair Tesco Value. Which would you like?

Would you care to join Mistle and me on the dance floor? Dancing is very good exercise for those who are up the duff expecting a happy event.

I thought we might model our routine on this

kickassangel · 07/03/2009 22:15

hi people, we're all fine. sorry i don't pop in often, but i tend to be busy on the US thread, as they keep the same hours as me (sort of), and in real life i've found a 'mumsnet' type group!!!
weekly coffee morning, fortnightly nights out, offers of lifts when my car broke down, playdates for the holidays & a month of meals delivered to the woman who just had a baby!!!
how fab is that? dh can't believe it, i'm out & about now & have no time for housekeeping!
it also means babysitters (they have a database on the yahoo site) and they sometimes let the blokes come along (but not too often)
dd is still a little lonely & broke my heart when she was crying the other day, saying she had no firends & wanted a baby sister so she wouldn't be lonely!! think i'll 'borrow' the new baby every so often.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 22:24

Galss of bolly, kickassangel?

Your RL group sounds fantastic! MadBadbaby said last night that she wished she had a younger sister - she does this very occasionally - but when I pointed out that we are in fact seeing her unofficial sister tomorrow she was perfectly happy. Is there anything you can do to help your dd find friends - ballet class? swimming lessons?

If you'll excuse me, I'm going back onto the dance floor. Mellors has just come in from the shed and started to strut his stuff

DontCallMeBaby · 07/03/2009 22:46

Cat, I'm going to move the yolks to the back of the fridge, where they'll probably freeze solid. That'll do. I seem to have eaten raw meringue for my dinner, so I hope there's nothing intrinsically wrong with the eggs.

I won't be hanging around, despite Flickr telling me it hadn't managed to upload a video of DD reading Wendy The Wide-Mouthed Frog SOMETHING is hogging my bandwidth; it's quite painful.

In virtual reality however, I am drinking too much Bolly and dancing increasingly wildly.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/03/2009 22:56

Okaaaaaaay. It's Saturday night. The yurt is filling up - and yet, as it's magic, it's never crowded - the glitter balls are spinning and the bolly is flowing.

As there are now so many of us - and at least 100 naked mohawk babies - I think we could attempt this

kickassangel · 08/03/2009 00:38

madbad, yes we do swimming & dance & library visits.
it's the first time dd has had to make friends, before she just knew everyone cos we lived in the same village for years. getting skype sorted so we can talk to the family has helped a lot, although she seems to think it's for pulling silly faces at her cousins!
well, am feeling a little subdues after over indulging (slightly) in rl last night, and then having to get up early, so just a small glass for me, thanks

amber32002 · 08/03/2009 08:46

That was fun...spent the day at Crufts yesterday with friends. The NEC is huge! Blimey, you could get all the exercise you need just walking from one end to the other.

Tea's on if anyone wants a cup...

mistlethrush · 08/03/2009 14:35

I'll join you for a cup! Was your friend showing or were you just going for fun?

The only remote prospect of getting in 'officially' I'd every had would be if I restarted agility. I did that with two of my parent's dogs (were effectively family dogs, one got when I was at Uni the first time, the second got while I was at home doing a post grad). We got Bessie going to improve her social skills - and it did help a lot as she enjoyed doing it and she got used to being close to other dogs that weren't really interseted in her - just having their turns...

Dottie (No2) on the other hand would have been really good at it had I been able to settle down and work her over a small group of jumps etc - but she used to get so excited waiting that she had normally done the jumps (in what ever order she thought most appropriate) and a couple of others before I could get her to listen to me or come back to me!

Our current dog is hopeless at jumping. Climbing 6' Yorkshire stone walls because she can't get over the ladder stiles - that's different!

MJ told me that he wasn't tired and didn't need a nap. So I suggested that he had a little quiet time and read some books up in his bedroom. I am very pleased to report (and you'll have probably worked this out given I am mnetting) that I've not heard a bump or a squeek for a considerable length of time....

Catitainahatita · 08/03/2009 18:06

I'd love a cup please!

Amber and Mistle I am very impressed to hear your Crufts stories. Also am pleased hear that MJ has had his nap this afternoon. Perhas teatime won't be too much of trial tonight.

Kickass Hello, and thanks for your good wishes. I realise after rereading the previous page that I missed your post yesterday. I am happy to hear of your rl mums group; it sounds great. I have one friend here, one of the gang my DH runs with and the mother of twins my Ds's age. We see each other each week. However, yesterday DH said that this friend thinks I'm "hermetic" and only talks about my DS or her DS Probably true, but I don't know what else to talk about and I am too busy making sure DS does not pick up/try to eat prickly pears to converse properly. Still, its frustrating because she is the only person I know with young children here. I think I have to ake a bit more of an effort.

Sometimes I wish talking in rl was as easy as chatting on MN

DontCallMeBaby · 08/03/2009 18:41

Oh, Cat, that's not very helpful of your husband, telling you that - or very helpful of this friend, saying it in the first place. Grr to them. I have friends who I've never had a proper conversation with, thanks to kids, none of us seem to hold it against each other!

Mind you, it is getting a little easier with children more capable of entertaining themselves. Like this afternoon, when DD and her little friend entertained themselves for AGES upstairs, making a potion out of ALL DD's shampoo and conditioner, and then using it to annoint our bed.

So, I'll start with a cup of tea please ... ;)

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 08/03/2009 18:51

Would a glass of champagne be welcome? The sun is well and truly over the yardarm.

UniS · 08/03/2009 20:32

Ummm yes please.

Work finished for the day. Got home in time for roast dinner- thanks DH for cooking. About to give up in internet and see whats on the book shelf. just tomorrow at work to get through and then its boys birthday on tues.

NIght all
