Tea room the 5th - welcome to the yurt

1000 replies

UniS · 24/02/2009 10:49

Welcome to the tea room. A warm welcome to everyone, whether you have one child, none, or ten. This is a tea-and-muffin or booze-and-sofasorcanapees sanctuary for all. But certain standards of behaviour continue to apply - anyone engaging in fisticuffs will be ejected by George Clooney, ably assisted by Mellors the Gardener.

You have found us- did you like teh slide/ bridge over teh HaHa. Teh priest hole is still available, its just over there.

Mellors and I have erected the yurt, strewn rugs around and good a good fire going in the wood burner. The place is feeling toasty and warm with not a draft to be felt. The kettle is now singing away on the hob. selection of teas for all taste on the shelf along with the hand made by potters mugs. Mellors very ably fitted teh yurt window with a window sill onto which can be placed a selection of pot plants and george.

Can someone sort out RP ( who I think came over with the sofa) and plump up the hay pile for donk.

Glad to hear it Amber. You always sound so (not sure of the right words here, but think I mean articulate and confident in your posts that it was a bit disconcerting seeing you so upset yesterday.

Hello Jacksmama, still no news of the arrival of Jen's baby then? I saw you checked in before.

Catitainahatita · 05/03/2009 17:48

How did that smiley face get there? I suspect the NMB have gremlined theur way into my keyboard.

Jacksmama · 05/03/2009 18:40

No news about jen and I checked the birth announcements as well - she's probably in her baby bubble and has completely forgotten about us (as she should)!!!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/03/2009 19:13

Eccentric? How very dare you!

No, I really don't understand why anybody would think anything or anyone here was eccentric.

DontCallMeBaby · 05/03/2009 19:19

I've been away so long the tearoom/yurt fell off Threads I'm On! Woe! I see the NMBs are still around, albeit less naked than before. And have I got this right - they've been making egg sandwiches?! How atypically helpful of them.

My neighbour has just been telling me that it's the only children that have the hardest time leaving her house (she is impromptu childminder for half the street, as she doesn't work at the moment, has two kids 17 months apart and is just generally quite cool, caters for at least extra children at mealtimes). But she did agree when I said I'm sure they appreciate the peace and quiet once they actually get home ... maybe.

She had DD after school cos I was out getting a quote to put right the Waitrose Incident. Ouch. Insurance, I think.

amber32002 · 05/03/2009 19:20

Catita, articulate and confident?? Blimey, do I? I must be doing something right then

No, I'm a very typical aspie, me. Can natter on at great length about this and that, then something unexpected happens and it's a mad scramble for safety from me. We're very good at overthinking and overpanicking, er, and over-posting

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/03/2009 19:30

Welcome back, DCMB! And, yes, Amber, you do project an aura of confidence and articulacy.

Jacksmama · 05/03/2009 19:39

DCMB, did I miss it? What Waitrose incident?

DontCallMeBaby · 05/03/2009 19:46

Two years?! Oh blimey. I had read not that long before renewing the insurance that the company weren't good on customer service, but their quote was cheapest and I didn't actually intend to try out the customer service. But it will cost £440 to fix, so even with a £300 excess that's £140 I don't have to fork out.

JM - I was distracted by DD perusing the Australian Women's Weekly in the back of the car just at the wrong moment, as I was going round a corner with a huge kerb (Waitrose carpark) and it had catastrophic effects on my car's bodywork. It happened last Frida. I'd only been in for a sodding pint of milk (needless to say I'd purchased rather more than a pint of milk).

UniS · 05/03/2009 20:30

Cat- that is one cool poncho. I swung by th cafe today and had a look at at teh mexican night poster. Apparently one can try out their dressing up clothes and there is a PRIZE for best dressed mexican. FAB, prize is free Mexican meal on a different date. I think that un used stripey blanket/ rug is ginna get poncho ed. now who do I know that might have a BIG sombrero one of my theatre company contacts has surely...

Spring is certainly in teh air for RP & MRP isn't it. didnt know Gs smoke, learn something new every day.

Donk - really sorry that its a grade 3. Is there anything you'd like to know ?

This week was Rome (airport is a complete dump btw) and a trip to the sparkly new Oxford cancer centre.

Next weeks San Fran trip has been cancelled - hurrah !

The Owl costume is a total success, and DS did a lot of flapping round the house this morning hooting delightedly, and requiring that we hold out bits of food so that he could 'land on our arms'

DH is always willing to advise on insurance matters if you need help MadBad ?

Bolly time ?

Jacksmama · 05/03/2009 20:51

Oh yes, it's Bolly time!!! (Although I'm at work but virtual Bolly shouldn't have any effect on my performance with my patients, should it?

DCMB that is so about your car... now that you've re-told the story, I do remember .

CMOT, hurrah on not having to go to SF overnight! It seemed it a bit to me to send you across 8 timezones for one day.

Hugs to Donk and Amber (I know you said you're feeling better but I suspect you could probably need it anyway) and about the constumes.

Donk · 05/03/2009 20:54
Jacksmama · 05/03/2009 20:57

and for Donk

Donk · 05/03/2009 20:58

And no, I'm certainly not strange

Whatever gave people that idea?

Anyone else for brandied hot chocolate?

Donk · 05/03/2009 21:01

Thanks for the hug Jacksmama - perhaps you can wave to my Aunt in Juneau (ok, I know its over the border)?

daisy99divine · 05/03/2009 21:12

Gosh, Donk, it is so powerless being a patient isn't it, particulalry a patient who Knows Some Stuff and especially being a patient's relative ... I can't offer practical help but can keep the galvanised bucket full for you - and well done with the Pesky Kids

cMOT so glad San Fran is cancelled cos I know you didn't want to go. Stories of your DS always make me smile - sitting on your arm for food, troughing popcorn as a horse, he has a great imagination doesn't he!

Following UniS lead I dashed off to the Library for my WBD token. They had no posters, no nothing and had to hunt around for tokens and then asked me how many children I had. God, I'm too honest, I should have said 24

Amber, I always think you are very articulate and funny, actually...

DCMB lovely to see you again! Grr re Waitrose. When DaisyBoy was 6 weeks old I had a Waitrose incident. I had at that stage not fully recognised the Imperative of the Hungry Baby so left DH and DaisyBoy outside while I spent blissful time shopping. Came out to hear YELLING from the car park (DH couldn't leave because Daisy Hound was also there and it was hot etc etc)anyway, I ran in a panic and got to the car and led go of the trolley full of shopping in a panic and on a hill.....
it went straight down the hill and bounged a big dent into a BMW
had one of those moral panics, but left our names and had irate call from man. He asked for my insurance details and of course I had to tell him that really, you couldn't get insurance for early maternal numptiness....I told him the whole sorry story and said (bravely and a bit pathetically) that of course I would pay. He very decently said he would get a mate or a non-BMW to sort it out so it wasnot £10 squillion more than need be

Then he rang back a week later for more details and then never rang back again... he obviously just decided to get it done on his own insurance....

such a nice man. I have never thanked him but it was a lovely thing to do.

I get home delivery now

CMOTDibbler · 05/03/2009 21:29

Donk - I think that it isn't common to do the cytology here either for adult brain tumours at least. Getting good quality radiotherapy to the highest possible dose is key - IMRT if possible, and concurrent with chemo whilst the blood/brain barrier is disrupted and letting the drugs through.

The meeting wasn't cancelled for my benefit - the customer decided that he couldn't make the date he had agreed.

Daisy - yes, he has a fab imagination, and now makes up his own stories. It's funny as my mum always said that as a small child I would witter on in the back of the car about my stories, and now I find myself doing the same thing

Waitrose Delivers are now in our area - am slightly sad as I presume that means no more Ocado, but hopefully a bigger range of free from food so hurrah! Will maybe keep DH out of the giant Waitrose/John Lewis hybrid store - Ds had mysteriously acquired new tops when I got home

Am contemplating what colour to dye my hair tomorrow. It needs doing (too much grey roots), but brown or red ? That is the question. And can I be faffed to go and have my nails done ? We are going out to dinner tomorrow night - sans DS. This will be our 3rd night out together since he was born - so I feel some effort is in order

DontCallMeBaby · 05/03/2009 22:05

I think insurance for early maternal numptiness would be an excellent idea. In fact for a small extra charge, lifelong maternal numptiness insurance. It's either that or I need to drive a black cab with one of those soundproof screens between me and my little passenger.

There have been no World Book Day shenanigans around here, fortunately. I've always rather fancied dressing DD up as Sophie from The Tiger Who Came To Tea, but I don't know where we'd source the tights. Instead they are having World Awareness Week, with a country assigned to each year (although Reception and Year 2 have the same country, Kenya, for some unknown reason). They were invited to wear their country's flag colours on Monday - poor DD ended up in her school cardi (green), her little friend's school polo shirt (red, DD's is white) and her trampolining trousers (black). She didn't look much like she was out of uniform. She has been talking about African animals and looking forlorn about all the bad things 'we' do to them - it's all very well saying 'we' do bad things and meaning 'mankind', but 4yos take it terribly personally.

I think they should try a country a bit closer to home really. She struck a pose in the bath last night whilst wearing a flannel as a skirt and said 'ooh, baby' in a rather un-4yo manner. When I laughed she said 'whaaaat?' in an equally un-4yo manner and told me she was 'just being French'. I have been amused and perplexed all day, but DH has just shed some light on the matter - he's admitted that she has been exposed to a Girls Aloud video.

lightbulb moment

daisy99divine · 05/03/2009 22:06

oh, we have ocado and waitrose delivers here, but I guess the people density is sufficient !

Go red CMOT and also get your nails done - why not go the whole hog and have a pedicure too? Then you will feel fab tomorrow night! Is it something special? The 70th party? did you get the dress?

thumbwitch · 05/03/2009 22:07

evening all!

CMOTD - a nice shade of magenta perhaps? why not? I had a look at the Ocado site a while ago and it seriously lacked half the stuff I buy from Waitrose so never bothered. Hurrah that your meeting was cancelled!

daisy, you had a lucky break there with Mr BMW - especially as it was a BMW!

DCMB - I think Waitrose must specialise in really tight corners in their carparks - all the local ones to me have well dodgy bits, I nearly carved the side off my car the other day (but luckily braked beforehand)

Donk - have more G&B hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and perhaps a sprinkling of grated G&B chocolate as well for extra chocolatiness. Plus more brandy of course. many appendages crossed that your Dad's treatment is effective whatever it should turn out to be.

CMOTDibbler · 05/03/2009 22:18

I don't think magenta would go down well with work The engineers find my usual coppery browny red a bit scary

Am contemplating gel overlays - my colleague who I was out with yesterday has had them done in an attempt to have nice nails for the conference season, and it seems worthwhile to have manicure that lasts for a few weeks

Nothing special - one of DH's business friends is taking us out to dinner to celebrate the end of one of DH's big claims that they were involved with. It'll be nice to actually meet one of the people he talks about

But in 2 weeks time we have a dinner dance (staying with friends, one babysitter for both children), and then the weekend after is FILs 70th. After much trying on of dresses, I decided to wear the rather lovely red bodice and skirt that friend bought me to wear as her bridesmaid. I made organza shrugs to go with the dresses, so don't have to expose much skin

Donk · 05/03/2009 22:42

CMOT - I know that cytology is not routine for adults in the UK - but it is being increasingly done, and I believe that the Glasgow neuropathology dep.t now use it routinely

Anyway - 'tis not an option really for Dad.
I will ask about the type of radiotherapy on offer.

how much brandy did you put in it Thumbwitch?

Donk · 05/03/2009 22:42

what happened to my italics?

Donk · 05/03/2009 22:43

ah! now I see
how much brandy did you put in the hot chocolate ThumbWitch?
