DD11 won't eat

Cowsontheloose · 11/08/2023 19:52

My DD won't eat, she says she isn't hungry.
Shes always been picky, will only eat beige food. She won't try anything new, says she won't like the texture. We have tried everything we can think of.
Now its worse because she just won't eat.
Please any advice

She ate cereal at breakfast. That's it, yesterday, toast at breakfast

Will she have cereal or toast for lunch/dinner too? Not ideal but better than nothing.

No because she says she isn't hungry.
The lack of hunger is pretty new, but the pickyness isnt

I was like this as a child. If you can ignore it, that's the best tactic. Have faith that she will likely eat eventually if hungry enough. Offer, pass no comment, if hungry at bedtime offer toast or banana or milkshake. For me the fuss and attention made me want to eat even less. No reaction, no watching her, act like all normal.

We're you picky in your choices too? Or just not hungry?

I may try letting her eat in a separate room as she also hates the sound of us eating. Hoping this may work in the short term. It's just so frustrating.

If it’s a sound thing, would headphones and listening to music whilst eating help?

Fishmongers · 12/08/2023 12:23

I think less then 500 calories for more then a few days needs a GP referral to an eating disorder clinic.

BungleandGeorge · 12/08/2023 12:26

Is she going up to secondary school? Or any other worries/ stresses at the moment?

We bought her some flare earbuds for this reason but she never puts them in.

I was picky and stressed around food which looked not perfect and this is how I loose my appetite. I knew all the attention would be on how and what I ate. I was already nervous before dinner even started because I didn't like the attention, it made me feel sick. It took me until my thirties to understood that the feeling sick was hungriness and worrying. For me, the picky was the first problem and the problem was bigger with the big focus on me. I do not have food issues since about 16.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2023 17:29

What's she doing all day after she's eaten breakfast?

If she's laying in bed an phone she can probably manage that and feel ok? It won't be sustainable though.

I'm wondering if you can organise some energetic activity (swimming/trampoline?) and try and increase her feeling of hunger?

But also you need to try and not persuade her to eat or mention food - but rather find ways to increase the hunger feeling.

However if a few days into this she still hasn't voluntarily upped her food intake I'd be making an emergency appointment with the GP.

Greenfinch7 · 08/09/2023 13:06

Not eating can take away your appetite rather than making you hungry, so I would not ignore this. Lots of people with anorexia or other very restricted eating patterns just don't feel hungry.
Sorry not to be helpful; I have no answers, just don't think that kids necessarily start eating 'when they get hungry enough'.

Better thanks. I think it was nerves from the transition upto secondary school (which has been alot easier than we anticipated)

I'm so glad she's feeling a little better. That must have been worrying for you.

Just wondering if you looked up ARFID as a PO suggested? You've mentioned that she has misophonia, is there a chance she could be ND?

I did look up ARFID, a couple of the points sounded like her, but not all.
I do wonder if she is ND, I'm keeping a close eye on her
