Tea Room The 24th - San Francisco Painted Lady!

Welcome to the 24th incarnation of the One-Child Tea Room. Not that you only have to have one! Just so long as you enjoy chat, tea, coffee, cake!!

The usual rules apply - no bunfighting. If you like that sort of thing, go elsewhere.
Other rules: bring Wine. Or Brew.

Our ongoing voyage take us to one of San Francisco's Painted Ladies!

We've brought the Aga over, it's in the back in the cosy kitchen overlooking the back garden. The chintz sofa is in the front room, under the bow window! All of the pillows and duvets have come along as well!

What's that? The Priest Hole? It's just over there --> behind the bookcase!

Mellors is upstairs, preparing the bedrooms for naps and such. Wink

The aspidistras are thriving as they overlook Nob Hill! The horses have found themselves stabled in the Garden, which is much larger than these places usually are in this city!

So come in and have a seat!

::tea hurries off to Powell Street to catch the Cable Car to Ghirardelli Square::

Scout - I feel exactly the same! and also it's MIL. I find it slightly odd when he smells of her perfume, almost like I'm cuddling her by proxy (we don't do hugs, her and me, not really our style) and I can't wait to get rid of it.

Scout19075 · 14/03/2011 23:29

It's strange because my MiL and I get along really well. I just don't like TS smelling like her. He should smell like him -- baby and fresh and all of that.

It's nice to know, though, I'm not the only one.

Anything I can do to stop feeling this way?

oxeye · 14/03/2011 23:53

I'm exactly the same, and its my MiL too - in fact I don't like it when Oxbloke smells of her either
I think its because its not my family smell but shes about the only other person who would cuddle them both that closely. I have to wash both boy/ man and associated clothes - and I love my MiL dearly, and hug and kiss her myself!

Racing don't you worry. Oxboy shows no interest in cycle either - he's a scooter boy just on balance bike but it makes him tired. Tricycle was too much effort too - I think they must be twins Wink

Tee2072 · 15/03/2011 06:32

Morning.

::places muffins, scones and croissants on sideboard along with tea, coffee and hot chocolate::

That's my apology for not being around!

No help from me, I'm afraid, Scout. No one else but me and MrTee cuddle LCT on a regular basis.

JM...peanut butter and pretzel?! Hmm

As for childhood friends; I have none. I have reconnected with some uni and high school friends through Facebook but I really only talk to the uni ones. I've changed too much since high school, really.

Still too dark to confirm nice weather, but I think we arte off to the park today!

Morning ! Just a quick pop in as I'm im Deutschland today.

DS has a bike, but is wedded to his stabilisers. It would help if he just concentrated on cycling and not peering at everything else...

MaryBS · 15/03/2011 08:47

I'm another one who hated it when my two were handed back absolutely REEKING of MIL's perfume Blush

DutchOma · 15/03/2011 08:54

Warning to Oma:- don't use perfume when cuddling your offsprings' offsprings.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/03/2011 10:47

Hello, DutchOma. Nice to see you again.

I have no MiL so can't really contribute to the conversation. But I agree that it's disconcerting when one's child smells wrong - I notice that even after a day in school.

teafortwo · 15/03/2011 11:56

Our sense of smell is the sense most linked to our emotions and memory - I have never experienced that myself Scout but it makes COMPLETE sense.

A teaching assistant I know was stopped by a woman standing beside her at the freezer section of a supermarket on her way home from work. The woman said "Do you work at LALALA school?" "Yes!" The teaching assitant answered and being in a town with several schools and not recognising the woman as a parent/governer etc continued "But how do you know that?" So the woman bashfully explained "...it is because my son used to go there when he was young and you smell just like he used to when he came home from school."

Actually I find 'trigger' smells very interesting. I often find myself thinking of someone or a place and then afterwards identify a smell I have walked past that has triggered the thought. IYSWIM?

teafortwo · 15/03/2011 12:01

DutchOma - have a Brewso so lovely to see you... and don't worry about the perfume. I like it when my dd smells of things other than our place maybe your ddil doe too. It is like a journal of her day!

So - What perfume do you use? (I LOVE perfume) Since someone mentioned it in the tearoom I am currently very involve in The Body Shops White Musk.

thumbwitch · 15/03/2011 12:11

oh yes, tea - olfactory memory triggers are amazing. So graphic!
Do they still do white musk?? am amazed. I used to be able to wear that without too much stress - couldn't wear much else as I have quite acidic skin and most perfumes end up smelling like cat's pee on me. I have only had 3 perfumes that really suited me in my life, all discontinued. Jovan - fleurs or something - smelt like freesias. Revlon - Xia Xiang - very rose-based. And finally Liz Taylor's Black Pearls - spicy, rosy and slightly musky but only lightly so - divine perfume! Can still buy it online but it isn't made any more I still have a supply, and although the top notes have gone, they fade very quickly anyway - the middle and base notes are the same and it still smells great.

I have been trying to find a new one and so far Stella McCartney's organic perfume - that's very rosey and is rather nice, but smells very like a perfume that MIL wears. So I suppose I could get around the whole MIL smell ishoo by wearing a similar-smelling perfume to her! Grin

Tee2072 · 15/03/2011 12:35

This conversation has reminded me of one time when I was on a long bus trip and was feeling very ill; headache and nausea. Then I caught a whiff of someone's perfume and it was the same one my mom wears and I felt instantly batter!

Thanks for the Brew Tea.

Jacksmania · 15/03/2011 17:19

My mum has used Tresor by Lancome for years. I love it on her (smells awful on me). Whenever I smell it, I feel very happy :)

amberlight · 15/03/2011 18:15

Tend not to wear perfume - smells too strongly. As I was co-leading an RE session for 45 children today, and we were using Myrrh oil as part of it, it was quite a challenge Grin

My hair is actually falling out. How dare it Hmm

Who's for a restorative tonic? Wine

Scout19075 · 15/03/2011 21:36

amber, how rude of your hair!

No one in my family (nor most of my friends, now that I think about it) wear perfume on a daily basis (for me and my family it's cuz most perfumes cause migraines after prolonged exposure). I think that's why I notice funny scents on TS.

Good night with my older girlies, though only had four of them.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/03/2011 21:42

Yes, most rude of Amber's hair. Perhaps it caught sight of the glamorous wig and decided to leave home.

I'll certainly join you in a restorative tonic.

Wine Wine Wine

thumbwitch · 15/03/2011 21:56

oh Amber - your hair is Very Naughty. But at least it means you can wear your fabulous wig soon! Have you got some silk headscarves (or other appropriate soft material that doesn't irritate you in any way) that you can wrap around your head while your are moulting?

I only wear perfume occasionally. My mum used to wear Charlie every day, my nan wore Tweed - but I think for them perfume was the same as putting on your lippy and face powder, you didn't leave the house without it.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/03/2011 21:59

Oh, Charlie. ::nostalgic:: The first great love of my life bought me a bottle of Charlie. I wear perfume quite often but not every day.

::Pretends to be 15 again::

oxeye · 15/03/2011 22:35

I don't wear perfume. But I'm lazy. It's a miracle I put clothes on. That's it
reverse story for me. My mum used to have a fancy special occassion perfume she used to spray just before we went out. I used to be really car sick as a child. Smell now makes me heave Grin

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/03/2011 22:38

Morning all.

::tee places poncey new coffee pot on side board]]

T'was a gift. I love it. Makes very nice coffee!

Today we are off to the park even if the skies open and we drown on the way!

Oxeye, I always wear clothes. They don't always match. Grin

amberlight · 16/03/2011 09:25

Oxeye, I am glad that you do indeed put clothes on, given your job in real life which of course we neither know nor mention. Otherwise those encountering you on Official Business would certainly be a little distracted Grin

Lovely coffee pot! ::helps herself::

UniS · 16/03/2011 11:07

that is a VERY poncey coffee pot. kinda cool tho.
